The Town of Holly Springs is upgrading its most popular turf playing field in advance of the fall sports seasons. The Womble Park multipurpose turf field will be closed beginning Monday, June 5 for work that includes replacing the top carpet with brand-new, denser material.
Fresh rubber and sand filler will be combined with existing filler that will be cleaned and rejuvenated, giving the turf fresh, new bounce.
Work is expected to wrap up within a couple months with the new field opening in time for rec soccer season.
“No matter what time of the day, if the gates are open at the Womble Park turf fields, people are out and enjoying them,” said Adam Huffman, Holly Springs Parks & Recreation assistant director. “We are very excited to announce the replacement of the turf carpet and the infill rejuvenation so the park’s many visitors can continue to enjoy this amazing amenity.”
The Womble turf field opened in 2013. With near-constant usage, visitors may have noticed deteriorating carpet fibers and gradual hardening of the field as the rubber and sand filler were dispersed.
“One of the best aspects of this project is that the materials involved will be reused,” Huffman said. “The top carpeting layer will be repurposed by a vendor for other types of uses elsewhere. The rubber and sand infill will be cleaned, combined with new material, and reused on the field.”
The first step of the project involves replacing the mesh fencing along Stinson Avenue. Next, the old 211,000-square-foot carpet covering will be removed in sections. Rubber and sand infill will be vacuumed, cleansed, and readied for reuse on the field. Crews will inspect the field’s infrastructure, ensuring it remains properly compacted.
The new turf covering with a thicker weave and permanent lines will be fitted onto the field and then secured. Then the infill will be worked into the carpet.
