Installation begins Friday on a traffic light at the intersection of Main and Ballentine streets downtown.
The light should begin operating in December after a few days to finish the work and a week or two with the light on flashing yellow to prepare drivers.
The work Friday should not significantly impede Main and West Ballentine traffic except for a few minutes sometime Friday afternoon before rush hour. That is when workers will bolt the horizontal mast arm to the traffic light pole. Traffic must stop briefly for safety then while the mast arm is secured. Main Street traffic may also have to shift slightly to move safely around construction equipment during the afternoon.
Equipment will take up a few parking spaces on East Ballentine Street beside the office condominiums. Drivers will be able to turn onto East Ballentine from Raleigh Street, but not from Main Street, during the work Friday.
The traffic light increases safety at the intersection, especially for drivers turning from West Ballentine onto Main Street. It is the first Town-maintained traffic light in Holly Springs. The others are operated by the state Department of Transportation, which must approve any changes to them.
