Reclaimed Water System

Reclaimed water logo Funding & Partners of the System

The Town of Holly Springs completed the first phase of a system delivering recycled wastewater to a golf course, a subdivision and the Holly Springs Business Park for irrigation.  The system, which is one of only four in the State of North Carolina, significantly will reduce the town’s impact on drinking water supplies as well as its discharge of treated wastewater into nearby waterways.

Congressman David PriceA few years ago, the Town recognized an opportunity to recycle water from the Holly Springs Water Reclamation Facility (wastewater treatment plant.)  With the right processes and distribution systems in place, wastewater could be super-treated and then used for irrigation in the place of potable (drinking) water.

The Town established a consortium of partners in the project, including end users in the vicinity of the wastewater treatment plant:  Holly Springs Business Park; Twelve Oaks Golf Course; and Twelve Oaks residential community.

The $2 million project was paid for with development fees and a $750,000 federal grant secured by Congressman David Price. With funding in the place, construction commenced in October 2009.

Process

  • The technology used is established and was relatively easy to implement.  The project involved:
  • Construction of an overhead 500,000-gallon storage tank at the corner of Irving Parkway and New Hill Road; and
  • Installation of pipeline up to 6 inches in diameter from the treatment plant to the storage tank, which feeds a network of piping from the tank to irrigation lines in the public medians of Green Oaks Parkway, several lawns in the Holly Springs Business Park and in the Twelve Oaks Golf Course Community.

The Holly Springs Reclaimed Water System Storage Tank holds 500,000 gallons of clean, treated wastewater.  A network of purple underground pipes delivers the water for irrigation uses. Reclaimed water is available only west of G.B. Alford Highway.  In the future, lines will be extended eastward.  Eventually, reclaimed water will be available to all parts of Holly Springs.

Construction of the pipeline, tank and metering fixtures commenced in October 2009 and was completed March 2010.
