Benefits of Reclaimed Water |
While they are not immediately obvious, the impacts of the Town's Reclaimed Water System on the local economy and quality of life in our community are complex and significant.
This project is important to you.
Environmental Benefits
- Reduces the amount of water withdrawn from the Cape Fear River for irrigation.
- Reduces fertilizer use and runoff that has impacts on Utley Creek and Harris Lake.
- Saves drinking water. Recycled water – also called reclaimed water or reuse water -- can be used for non-potable uses such as irrigation. Because it is recycled from sewerage, reuse water is non-drinkable and is identifiable as such stored in tanks and piped through lines colored in a particular branded shade of purple as required by state and federal regulations.
Economic Benefits
- Saves users on the cost of water for irrigation. Reuse water can be provided at a lower cost than treated drinking water, saving citizens money and conserving a precious natural resource.
- With expanded wastewater treatment, the Town can attract big industrial and business users, which provide jobs and tax base.
- Saves users fertilizer costs
- Saves the Town money. The Town can use reclaimed water for the irrigation of public spaces in the Holly Springs Business Park.
Social Benefits
- Assists the Town in meeting its environmental protection objectives.
- Improves the quality of landscaping in public spaces.
- Reduces the frequency of turf damage during drought conditions because reuse water still will be available.
