Storm Cleanup in Full Swing with Neighboring Towns' Assistance 4/26/2011

Updated Tuesday, April 26

Holly Springs Public Works crews are on the second round of storm debris collection.

Apex, Fuquay-Varina, Cary and Butner have participated in the cleanup.

Public Works Director Luncie McNeil praised the other towns for their assistance.

"It's just what we do as municipalities," he said. "We come together like family when there is a need."

Meanwhile, Parks and Recreation programs and classes are virtually back to normal operation. The only athletic field not back in use is the softball field at Holly Springs High School.

Fire Station 2 on Avent Ferry Road received major structural damage when the roof tore loose and flooding occurred inside. The station is uninhabitable. It will be demolished, and a new station built there.

Station 2 firefighters are on the property during the day and spend nights at Station 1 off Holly Springs Road. Within weeks, firefighters will be at Station 2 day and night when temporary living quarters and a truck shelter are in place.

Town officials received no reports of serious injuries from the tornado that cut through Holly Springs on April 16.

At least four houses were rendered unsafe because of storm damage and will need repairs before they can be occupied. Holly Springs' Code Enforcement estimated that 10 or fewer houses total appeared to have substantial damage.

Except for minor shingle or siding replacement, homeowners should contact Code Enforcement before beginning repairs to learn whether they will require a permit.

The Town Council voted April 19 to waive building permit fees for storm damage repairs through the end of May. The waiver applies only to repairs necessitated by the April 16 storm.

Public Works crews will begin a second round of storm debris collection after the Good Friday weekend, anticipating that homeowners will have brought more storm debris to the street by then.

"For a time to come people are going to be bringing debris out to the curb for us to collect," McNeil said. "Until someone says otherwise, we will be coming through to collect that debris."

Public Works crews asked that residents bring storm debris to the street as soon as possible. Tree limbs and other vegetative storm debris should be piled separately from other types of storm debris to the extent possible.

Holly Springs police recommended that homeowners be on guard against repair scams and take these precautions suggested by the state Attorney General's Office.
