Town Offices Open 10 a.m. Wednesday 1/11/2011

Holly Springs Town offices will open at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12 as icy road conditions prompted a two-hour delay for the second consecutive day.

Waste Industries is running a day behind schedule on garbage and recycling collection this week since crews were unable to run routes safely on Tuesday.

All Holly Springs Parks and Recreation facilities close at 4 p.m. Tuesday and reopen at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Classes, programs and games that were postponed will be rescheduled as soon as possible.

Police Chief John Herring implored motorists to stay off roads during icy conditions unless absolutely necessary.

Holly Springs police responded to several traffic accidents and multiple reports of cars skidding off the road Tuesday morning. The calls were concentrated in three or four problem areas. No serious injuries were reported.

A Holly Springs police cruiser was struck from behind midmorning Tuesday after the officer had pulled over along N.C. 55 Bypass near Wal-Mart to assist another motorist who had slid off the highway. The officer did not require transport to the hospital.

Herring said even minor mishaps can lead to dangerous situations for passing motorists as well as for drivers who have become stranded.

"It creates a situation where drivers have to maneuver," he said, "and there's no room for error on ice."

Public Works crews continued spreading sand and salt mixtures Tuesday on hills and at intersections.

The Parks and Recreation Department follows the cancellation schedule of Wake County Public Schools for programs, classes and events.
