Ice Preparations Under Way 1/10/2011

Holly Springs Town offices may open at 10 a.m. Tuesday if forecasts for snow and ice Monday afternoon and evening hold true.

Public Works crews began spreading sand and salt mixtures Monday morning on customary troublespots, including low areas and hills within some subdivisions. The plan was to hit larger streets once precipitation began since sand and salt applied too early can be blown away by swiftly-moving traffic.

Public Works Director Luncie McNeil said snowplows would go to work if accumulation reached 2 inches. Crews would begin on major thoroughfares.

All Holly Springs Parks and Recreation youth basketball games scheduled for Monday night, Jan. 10 were canceled. The revised schedule will be posted when completed.

The Discovering Nature class scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11 at Bass Lake Park has also been canceled.

Holly Springs Parks and Recreation follows the cancellation schedule of Wake County Public Schools for programs, classes and events. Schools let out 2 1/2 hours early Monday.

Call the Parks and Recreation weather hotline at (919) 557-2939 for program cancellations and scheduling changes.

Progress Energy customers can call (800) 419-6356 to report loss of electrical power. Customers can get Progress Energy storm updates, including outage maps and answers to frequently asked questions.

McNeil asked for patience from motorists in the vicinity of the Town's road-clearing equipment.

"When you see a snowplow approaching, please don't pull out in front," he said. "The best thing is to just stay off the road unless you have an emergency."
