Safe Bicycling Receives Focus 2/25/2011

Holly Springs police officers are teaching young bicyclists to ride safely while the Engineering staff is surveying bike riders of all ages, seeking ways to accommodate them in transportation plans.

A Kids Bicycle Rodeo is set for Saturday, March 19 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. behind Town Hall at 128 S. Main St. This recurring event highlights safety in a fun way with special events and prizes.

The bike rodeo will include bike tuneups and helmet-fitting in addition to safety instruction, gifts and prizes. Food will be available for purchase. Co-sponsors include the Holly Springs Rotary Club and Britfit Personal Training.

During the event, the Town will gather input for the bicycle plan under development. The Engineering staff and plan consultant Greenways, Inc. will have maps on which people can show their suggestions.

"The bike rodeo is an opportunity for the public to give their opinions on what they would like to see in the bicycle plan and to ask questions," said Scott Evenson of the Engineering staff.

The plan will address the needs of all users, ranging from novice neighborhood and trail bike riders to expert road bicyclists. Plan completion is expected in late summer.

The bicycle survey probes for barriers to bicycling in the community and asks for respondents' project priorities.
