Farmers Market Opens Third Season Saturday, May 2 4/20/2009

The Holly Springs Farmers Market opens its third season Saturday morning, May 2 at Town Hall with even more vendors offering fruits and vegetables, crafts, nursery stock, even all-natural pork products and homemade pasta.

Holly Springs School of Dance will perform at the top of each hour on opening day. The students are raising money to help support their upcoming trip to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The Holly Springs Farmers Market will operate 8 a.m. until noon on Saturdays from May through October in the parking lot beside Mims Towne Square.

With more than two dozen vendors, the Town-operated market strikes a balance of farmers, artisans, crafts and other sellers.

“This is a ‘producers-only’ market, meaning that all vendors must make what they are selling,” said Robin Pfister, market coordinator. “Most of our vendors are right here from Holly Springs.”

New vendors this year include Adcock's Nursery as well as Hidden Pond Farm with its all-natural, free roaming pork and pork products. Grill Master Chuck's joins the market with spices, rib rubs and BBQ sauces, and The Food Peddler will have homemade pasta.

Visit www.HSFarmersMarket.com for the list of vendors and other market details or call (919) 567-4010.

The 2009 season promises to be the biggest yet for the Holly Springs Farmers Market. In addition to more vendors than ever, the market has new features in addition to special events.

Master Gardener Sabrina Thompson will be at the market on the third Saturday of each month. Thompson, who is park manager at the Town-owned Bass Lake Park and Retreat Center, will address your gardening questions and concerns.

Also new this year is the Local Celebrity Series, introducing some of your neighbors who have special interests and talents.

  • May 16 - Holly Springs resident and children's author Carol Crane will read from her book “T is for Tar Heel” at 10 a.m. She will also sign and hand out copies of another of her books for the first 50 children attending.
  • June 20 - Raleigh's Ed Brantley, last season's runner-up on NBC’s hit show “The Biggest Loser”, will do cooking demonstrations at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. He’ll use products from that morning’s market.
  • July 25 - Local author and Town Historian Barb Koblich will have artifacts and lore to celebrate Holly Springs Founder's Day.

As in the past, the Holly Springs Farmers Market coordinates with the Holly Springs Police Department on special events that the department has at Town Hall.

These include a bicycle safety rodeo for children on May 30, low-cost rabies clinics on June 20 and Sept. 19, and free document shredding to deter identity theft on Oct. 17.
