Hunt Center Plans Detailed April 16 4/9/2009

Construction is expected to start this summer on replacement of the Hunt Center. Work on the long-awaited project will take about 18 months.

The half-century-old former school building needs major renovation to provide adequate conditions for customers and staff.

The project includes construction of a new classroom building behind the existing one. To keep programs running, the old building will remain in use until the new one is finished. Then the old building will be demolished to make way for parking.

The project includes replacing the 20,000 square feet of space in the existing building and adding a 2,000 square foot lobby.

A larger fitness area, aerobics room and game room are part of the design. The design also includes an elevated walking track. Twelve times around equals a mile.

Gymnasium renovation highlights include a new floor and heating and air conditioning system.

Given how much the community depends on the Hunt Center, Town leaders say the timing seems right to move forward, even with the estimated cost at $7.5 million.

With contractors hungry for work, Town officials expect to receive much better bids than if they wait for economic upturn. Bankers have estimated the Town could save 10 percent by building now, a potential savings of $750,000.
