Schools Plan Emergency Drill Jan. 21 1/16/2009

Holly Ridge Middle and Elementary schools and Holly Springs Elementary School will be closed off briefly Wednesday morning, Jan. 21, as police and school officials conduct an emergency response drill.

No one will be allowed on campus during the drill, which is scheduled to start about 9:30 a.m. Wednesday and last only about 10 minutes.

Passersby will see police activity around the campuses Wednesday morning. Police and school officials are spreading word of the exercise so that people don't think it's an actual emergency. Letters about the drill went home with students Friday.

"This drill is to practice communication between the neighboring schools, law enforcement and Wake County security to ensure the safety of all students, teachers and citizens," said Lt. Anthony Revels of the Holly Springs Police Department.

The drill is preparation for a major exercise this summer simulating deployment to a school shooting. Security officials with Wake County Public Schools have chosen Holly Springs for the rapid deployment exercise, the first of its kind in the county.

The full-scale exercise this summer will involve students in role-play, with videotaping for use in subsequent training.
