December

Block of Center Street to Become One-Way 12/04/08

Center Street between Main Street and Avent Ferry Road will become a one-way street beginning early next year to in an effort to enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians downtown.

The block between Mims Towne Square and Dewar’s Florist Antiques & Interiors will be for westbound traffic turning off or crossing Main Street. Drivers will not be able to pull out of Center Street onto Main Street.

Cultural Center Seeks Program Input 12/03/2008

Holly Springs Cultural Center is seeking public input on arts programming with a series of focus groups. The gatherings will be at the center on:

"It's a Wonderful Life" at Cultural Center 12/01/2008

The Holly Springs Cultural Center will present the North Carolina Stage Company production of “It’s A Wonderful Life” – a Radio Play on Saturday Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m.

This clever adaptation invites you to experience Frank Capra's beloved story in a refreshingly new and intimate way. Join us live in the studios of WBFR Radio on Christmas Eve 1946. The dozens of characters and locations of the classic movie will be brought to life by the long-lost radio formula of five actors, a live sound effects artist and your imagination.

Angel Tree Project Under Way 11/21/2008

The Town of Holly Springs is enlisting citizens to help families in need save their children's Christmas.

Choose an angel from the tree in the Town Hall lobby weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Please return all wrapped gifts by Thursday, Dec. 11 to allow Santa's helpers to deliver in time for the holiday.

Veterans Park Dedicated Nov. 9 11/3/08

Those who have served in the military and other townspeople are invited to the dedication of Veterans Park on Sunday, Nov. 9 at 4 p.m. at 600 Bikram Drive.
 
"We want to invite all veterans to come out," said Len Bradley, director of Holly Springs Parks and Recreation.

Watch for Trick-or-Treaters Oct. 31 10/29/08

Trick-or-treaters will be out and about Friday, Oct. 31. So Town leaders ask for your help in promoting safety and courtesy on Halloween.

Trick-or-treating ought to occur in early evening, wrapping up before 8:30 p.m. Residents who do not want to participate are asked to leave their porch lights off. Trick-or-treaters should respect those residents' wishes by not approaching their homes. It's safest for children to remain in their neighborhoods, visiting only the homes of people they're familiar with.

Stinson One-Way Oct. 25 10/24/08

Stinson Avenue from Grigsby Avenue to Indian Hill Road will be one-way Saturday, Oct. 25 until 5 p.m. to allow more on-street parking for HollyFest and for voting at Hunt Community Center.

The one-day switch to one-way traffic will provide room for parking on Stinson Avenue beside the soccer fields in Womble Park. That is a change from previous HollyFest celebrations.

HollyFest Held Oct. 25 10/21/08

Enjoy the biggest HollyFest celebration yet on Saturday, Oct. 25 with food, music, crafts, contests, games for kids and much more at Womble Park.

The fourth annual fall festival begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m. Admission is free.

Free Document Shredding Oct. 18 10/162008

Help prevent identity theft with free document shredding Saturday morning, Oct. 18 in the Town Hall parking lot.

The "shred-a-thon" from 9 a.m. until noon is presented in conjunction with the Holly Springs Farmers Market.

One-stop, absentee voting begins Oct. 23 at Hunt Community Center for the Nov. 4 election.

The weather hotline menu has been updated, allowing users to press 5 for the latest on either athletics scheduling or Bass Lake Park programming. The press 5 option is new.

HollyFest Vendor Applications Due Sept. 26 9/15/08

Vendor applications are due Sept. 26 for the annual HollyFest celebration held on the last Saturday in October at Womble Park.

The Parks and Recreation Department is accepting applications from food vendors, artists, nonprofit organizations and for the Children's Corner.

Rex Soccer Fields Open Sept. 13 9/9/08

A ceremony marking the opening of the Rex soccer fields will be Saturday, Sept. 13 at 11 a.m. near the intersection of Avent Ferry Road and N.C. 55.

Three soccer fields for the Town's athletic programs have been built on approximately 7 acres that Rex Healthcare is allowing the Town to use. The property is on the downtown side of N.C. 55, which is G.B. Alford Highway.

Storm's Approach Prompts Cancellations 9/05/08

All Holly Springs Parks and Recreation facilities will be closed Saturday, Sept. 6 because of the threat of severe weather from Hanna.

Rex Soccer Fields Open Sept. 6 8/29/08

A ceremony marking the opening of the Rex soccer fields will be Saturday, Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. off Avent Ferry Road on the east side of G.B. Alford Highway.

Three soccer fields for the Town's athletic programs have been built on approximately 7 acres that Rex Healthcare is allowing the Town to use.

Dog Day in the Park Sept. 13 8/27/08

Womble Park goes to the dogs Saturday, Sept. 13 with the annual Dog Day in the Park from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. at the picnic shelter.

Bring your dog to this family fun event. Local pet care companies will be there providing information and resources.

Water Restrictions Eased 8/22/08

The Town has eased water restrictions effective today.

Customers can now  use sprinklers and irrigation systems three times a week by schedule. Car washing and power washing are not restricted.

Police Prepare for Avent Ferry Road Congestion 8/21/2008

The looming mix of high school and elementary school traffic has police requesting motorists' patience on Avent Ferry Road. Meanwhile, the search continues for ways to alleviate congestion.

Police are bracing for heavy traffic Monday, Aug. 25 along Avent Ferry Road. Classes resume at Holly Springs High School, adding to existing congestion at the year-round Holly Grove Elementary School.

Water Line Breaks in Braxton Village 8/19/2008

An estimated 80 homes in the Braxton Village subdivision are without water this morning after a water line break in the intersection of Texana Way and Holly Meadow Drive.

Hospital Forum Aug. 6 at Cultural Center 8/05/08

Learn about the proposed Holly Springs Hospital at a forum Wednesday evening, Aug. 6, at 6:30 p.m. in Holly Springs Cultural Center.

Representatives of Novant Health will give a presentation on their plan to build a 46-bed, full-service community hospital. The proposed site is near the intersection of N.C. 55 and Ralph Stephens Road, in the vicinity of the Wal-Mart store.

Hospital Planned for Holly Springs 7/23/08

Novant Health will seek state approval to build a 46-bed, acute care hospital in Holly Springs near the southern intersection of N.C. 55 and Ralph Stephens Road.

Holly Springs Hospital would be the only full-service community hospital in southern Wake County. Its announcement follows a seven-year effort by Town leaders to bring a hospital to the community.

Tournament play for the Statewide Athletics Committee youth baseball will take place July 25-27 at Holly Springs' Womble Park.

Online Safety Forum July 17 7/14/08

Parents can learn about protecting children from online predators during a forum Thursday evening, July 17, from 7-9 p.m. at Holly Springs Cultural Center.

The Holly Springs Police Department is presenting the forum in conjunction with the FBI's Cyber Crime Task Force. The forum is intended for parents, not for children.

Switch to Recycling Carts Nears Completion 7/14/08

Delivery of the new rollout carts for recycling is nearing completion. Solid waste customers should call the Town's Public Works Department at (919) 552-5920 if they haven't received one.

Please use the green, 48-gallon carts only for recycling - not for household garbage or yard waste. Household garbage goes in the gray carts that are twice as large.

Rabies Clinic Held July 19 7/14/08

Vaccinate your dog or cat against rabies for only $5 on Saturday, July 19 from 9 a.m. until noon in the Police Department parking lot at Town Hall.

Holly Springs Animal Control officers are providing additional opportunities for low-cost rabies vaccination in light of several recent cases of rabies here in wildlife.

Town Hosts Baseball Tourney 7/02/08

Holly Springs' Womble Park will host two Cal Ripken Division youth baseball tournaments July 3-6, drawing District 2 teams from counties including Vance, Granville, Durham and Orange.

Rabid Raccoon Found in Garage 6/30/08

A raccoon that was found Sunday in the garage of a home in the Valleyfield subdivision has tested positive for rabies. Four confirmed and two suspected rabies cases have been investigated in Holly Springs in the past six weeks.

A homeowner who touched the raccoon found Sunday is being contacted by Wake County Public Health for advice on whether rabies prevention treatment is warranted.

Twice Weekly Irrigation Allowed 6/17/08

Holly Springs residents can use sprinklers and irrigation systems twice a week by schedule until further notice as permanent repairs continue at the Harnett County water treatment plant in Lillington.

The schedule is:

  • Even-number addresses - Wednesdays & Saturdays from 6-10 a.m. and 6-10 p.m.
  • Odd-number addresses - Thursdays & Sundays from 6-10 a.m. and 6-10 p.m.

Line Break Causes Water Emergency 6/15/08

Holly Springs residents should use water for drinking and cooking only until further notice because of a water line break that is severely limiting supplies.

A 36-inch line that serves Holly Springs and Fuquay-Varina with water from Harnett County broke during the night, leaving Holly Springs without any water from what has been its sole supplier.

Rabies Clinic Held Saturday, June 21 6/13/08

Vaccinate your dog or cat against rabies for only $5 on Saturday, June 21 from 9 a.m. until noon at Hunt Community Center.

The Holly Springs Police Department is providing additional opportunities for low-cost rabies vaccination in light of several recently reported cases of rabies here in wildlife. Town and Wake County Animal Control officers are conducting the clinic.

Wildfire Smoke Prompts Health Alert 6/12/08

Triangle air quality has reached unhealthy levels because of smoke drifting from the wildfire in eastern North Carolina. People should limit time outdoors, especially those who are most affected by air pollution.

A Code Red warning was issued Thursday for the Triangle area, including Holly Springs.

Kids Learn Bike Safety 6/11/08

Holly Springs police will teach children how to ride bicycles safely Saturday, June 21 between 9 a.m. and noon during the Holly Springs Farmers Market at Town Hall. Kids should bring their bicycles and helmets.

The Police Department's quarterly "bike rodeos" stress safety and etiquette. Children learn how to stop at stop signs and to yield the right-of-way as they maneuver through a course lined with traffic cones.

82nd Airborne Chorus Performs June 12 6/10/08

The All-American Chorus of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division performs a free concert Thursday, June 12 at 7 p.m. at Holly Springs Cultural Center.

Rabid Bat Found in Garage 6/09/08

A dead bat found Sunday in the garage of a Sunset Ridge home has tested positive for rabies. It is at least the third, and possibly fourth, case of wildlife rabies in Holly Springs in less than three weeks.

No family members or pets were believed to have been exposed to rabies. Town Animal Control officers referred the family to Wake County health officials for advice on whether protective shots against rabies were warranted.

Recycling Container Switch Nears 6/6/08

Solid waste customers should leave their 18-gallon recycling bins at the curb the week of June 23-27 so that Waste Industries can replace them with new 48-gallon rollout carts.

Customers should leave their recycling bins curbside for pickup then whether or not they have anything to recycle. Rollout cart usage starts the week of June 30.

Rabies Confirmed in Second Fox 5/27/08

Animal Control officers urge residents to be watchful in the wake of at least two, and probably three, wildlife rabies cases during the past week in the Sunset Lake / Optimist Farm Road area of Holly Springs.

Wake County Animal Control sent out automated telephone messages Tuesday afternoon within a 2-mile radius of a home on Optimist Farm Road where a rabid fox attacked a pet dog.

Two More Rabies Cases Suspected 5/25/08

A fox attacked a dog Saturday at a home on Optimist Farm Road, five days after another fox that was rabid scratched Sunset Lake Village homeowner in the same area of Holly Springs.

Also Saturday, a diseased and possibly rabid raccoon was found in one of the traps that Animal Control officers had set out in Sunset Lake Village where the first fox attack occurred

Rabies Confirmed in Fox 5/22/08

Rabies has been confirmed in a diseased fox trapped May 21 in Sunset Lake Village, Holly Springs police reported.

Officers believe it was the same fox that had scratched a homeowner on Tuesday, May 20. She is undergoing rabies prevention treatment.

Diseased Fox Tested for Rabies 5/21/08

Holly Springs Animal Control officers are awaiting rabies testing on a diseased fox they trapped Wednesday in Sunset Lake Village. They suspect it was the same fox that had scratched a homeowner there the previous day.

Test results on the euthanized fox are expected by Friday. The homeowner has begun rabies prevention treatment as a precaution.

Fox Encounters Stir Rabies Concerns 5/20/08

A homeowner in Sunset Lake Village was scratched by a fox Tuesday morning, and Holly Springs Animal Control officers are attempting to trap the animal to determine whether it has rabies.

The incident was one of at least four occasions in the past couple of weeks in which Town residents have had close encounters with the normally reclusive animals.

Kids Have Their Day 5/16/08

Children and their parents are invited to Womble Park on Saturday, May 17 from 2-4 p.m. for the 6th annual Kids Appreciation Day. Enjoy rides, karaoke, face painting, arts and crafts, food, a "Terrific Kids" ceremony and more.

Sponsors are the Kiwanis Club of Holly Springs and the Holly Springs Parks and Recreation Department.

2 Events Target Fraud 5/15/08

Protect your privacy with free document shredding Saturday morning, May 24 and with a fraud awareness forum that Holly Springs police will present Wednesday evening, May 28. Both are at Town Hall.

The events are part of the Holly Springs Police Department's crime prevention program, which includes Community Watch organizing and special events and forums on a variety of topics.

Harris Plant Tests Sirens May 14 5/13/08

Public alert sirens around the Harris Nuclear Plant will be tested Wednesday, May 14 between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. There are 83 sirens in a 10-mile area surrounding the plant. 

This will be a full-volume short duration test lasting approximately five seconds. The test is conducted to make sure each siren works properly. Residents may not hear the sirens unless nearby.

Litter Sweep Set for May 30 5/09/08

Town employees and citizen volunteers will pick up litter along roads and streams on Friday, May 30 from 1-3 p.m.

Participants will be divided into teams that will focus either on roads or on streams. The Town will provide all gear, including trash bags, safety vests, poles and gloves.

Police Advise Caution with Door-to-Door Sellers 5/8/08

The seasonal influx of door-to-door salespeople has Holly Springs police advising residents to be careful about allowing strangers into their home.

Magazine subscription sellers are among the door-to-door sales groups working their way through neighborhoods in spring and summer.

Council Receives Proposed Budget 5/07/08

Town Manager Carl Dean's proposed 2008-2009 budget includes a revenue neutral property tax rate of 41.5 cents and lowers the monthly charge for garbage collection.

Charges for water and for sewer service would rise a dollar per month each under the proposed annual budget presented to the Town Council at its May 6 meeting.

Fall Sports Registration Nears 5/07/08

Registration begins in mid-May for Holly Springs Parks and Recreation youth football, cheer and soccer seasons this fall.

Football and cheer registration begins Saturday, May 17 and ends June 6. The period May 17 - May 30 is reserved for Town residents only.

Town Honors Volunteers 4/29/08

They coach youth sports teams, tutor kids after school, beautify our parks, assist with recreation programs and serve on advisory boards.

Holly Springs' 460-plus citizen volunteers serve the Town in numerous ways.

Farmers Market Opens May 3 4/28/08

Holly Springs Farmers Market opens its second season Saturday morning, May 3 in the Town Hall parking lot.

A bluegrass band, the Railreaders, will play at the season opener courtesy of Sukeena Law Firm. The Holly Springs Police and Fire-Rescue departments will have equipment displays. McGruff the Crime Dog will be on hand.

Baseball, Softball Seasons Open 4/21/08

Approximately 700 baseball and softball players are scheduled to gather Monday evening, April 21 at Womble Park for Holly Springs Parks & Recreation Opening Day ceremonies.

All players, coaches and families are invited to attend the ceremonies, which will start at 6:15 p.m. on Field 4.

Superstreet Concept Explored 4/21/08

Learn about the innovative design for a potential road project along N.C. 55 near New Hill Road. Drop in at a public information workshop Thursday, May 1 at Hunt Community Center from 5-7 p.m.

See conceptual plans for a "superstreet" project in conjunction with proposed commercial and residential development along N.C. 55 Bypass, which is called G.B. Alford Highway.

Kids' Art Contest Hits the Sidewalk 4/16/08

A sidewalk chalk art contest, music and games highlight a celebration of Children's Book Week on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. until noon at the Holly Springs Cultural Center & Library.

Early Voting Starts April 26 4/14/08

Cast your May 6 primary election ballot early at Hunt Community Center beginning Saturday, April 26 between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The Hunt Center is among nine one-stop absentee voting locations in Wake County for those who want an alternative to visiting their assigned polling place on Election Day.

Seniors' Shopping Trips Arranged 4/14/08

Holly Springs Parks and Recreation is arranging twice monthly outings for people 55 and older to shop and visit the library. The trips are free and require no pre-registration.

Trips usually will be on the first and third Thursdays of the month. Pick-up will occur at Homegrown Pizza on Linksland Drive at 9:15 a.m. and the Dorothy Nixon Manor Apartments at 9:25 a.m.

Cary Players' Comedy Opens April 25 at Cultural Center 4/14/08

Spies, romance, silly magic tricks and the wonderful wit of Woody Allen are all on tap when Cary Players' production of “Don't Drink the Water” opens April 25 at Holly Springs Cultural Center.

This comedy delighted audiences when produced by David Merrick on Broadway and was the first of Allen's plays to make it to the big screen in the 1969 movie starring Jackie Gleason.

Cultural Center Offering Summer of Classes 4/11/08

Registration begins May 1 for a variety of summertime classes at Holly Springs Cultural Center.

Classes will run May - August and feature drama, cooking, dancing and special interests such as resumé building, re-entering the workforce and home-schooling.

Preorders Taken for April 12 Rain Barrel Sale 4/1/08

Come to Bass Lake Park on Saturday morning, April 12 for what may be the Town of Holly Springs' final rain barrel sale of the year.

Preordering is suggested. Call (919) 557-2924 to reserve a barrel and pay when you pick it up. The limit is two barrels per person. Holly Springs residents will receive first priority.

Town Eases Water Restrictions 4/1/08

The Town of Holly Springs will allow use of automated irrigation and sprinkler systems three times a week, easing watering restrictions to match those of its supplier, Harnett County.

The Town Council voted unanimously April 1 to ease restrictions, effective the following day. Improvement in the region’s drought allowed Harnett County to modify its water
conservation measures a few days earlier.

Good Friday Observed 3/20/08

Town Hall, Hunt Community Center and Holly Springs Cultural Center will be closed Friday, March 21 for the Good Friday holiday. Bass Lake Park remains open Friday.

The week's garbage collection and recycling schedule is not affected.

Pa. Baseball Team Spends Spring Break at Womble Park 3/20/08

The Fairview High Tigers practiced alone Wednesday afternoon in Holly Springs' Womble Park. If they'd been scrimmaging against another squad, the Tigers almost certainly would have been the “away” team.

Wednesday's 70-degree temperatures were just what the Erie, Pa.-area high school team needed for a productive afternoon of baseball practice.

Rabies Clinic Held March 15 3/12/08

Get your dog or cat vaccinated against rabies for only $7 on Saturday, March 15 between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. in the Police Department parking lot behind Town Hall.

Pre-Budget Hearing Set for March 18 3/4/08

The Holly Springs Town Council invites local residents and community service agencies to suggest how the Town's tax dollars should be spent in the budget year that begins July 1.

The public hearing will be part of the council's regular business meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 18 in Holly Springs Town Hall at 128 S. Main St. This pre-budget hearing will be an opportunity for citizens to share what programs, services or facilities they would like the Town to start or expand. Citizens can express their priorities for projects or programs and say what they think of existing fees and rates.

Harris Plant Sirens Tested March 19 3/04/08

Progress Energy will test its new siren system at full volume within 10 miles of the Harris Nuclear Plant between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 19.

Until then, the new sirens will be tested individually for short durations at full volume.

Rain Barrels Sold Saturday, March 15 2/27/08

Holly Springs rain barrel sales resume Saturday, March 15 at Bass Lake Park with a big supply designed to give folks a much better opportunity to purchase a barrel.

Holly Springs residents get first crack at buying a rain barrel from 8 - 11 a.m. on March 15. The sale opens to everyone - residents and non-residents - at 11 a.m. that day. No pre-orders are accepted. The limit is 2 barrels per person.

Raleigh Water Purchases Suspended 02/20/08

Holly Springs has begun buying all its water from Harnett County, suspending purchases from Raleigh to help that city conserve Falls Lake.

The change means that all of Holly Springs' drinking water will come from the Cape Fear River. The river is less critically affected by the current record drought than Falls Lake, which supplies Raleigh and the towns that it sells to.

Theater Issues Casting Call 2/20/08

Cary Players Community Theater will hold auditions Tuesday, March 4 at 6:45 p.m. in Holly Springs Cultural Center for the Woody Allen comedy "Don't Drink the Water."

Those auditioning should prepare a 1-2 minute comedic monologue. Auditions will include cold readings from the script. All roles are open.

Raleigh-Wake Senior Games 2/19/08

The registration deadline is March 14 for the 2008 Raleigh-Wake Senior Games, which will offer more than 30 sporting events plus artistic competition this spring for people 55 and older.

The Raleigh-Wake Senior Games and Silver Arts will be held March 31-April 13 at various sites throughout Wake County. Medal winners may compete in the N.C. Senior Games this fall.

Rain Barrels Available Mid-February 2/07/08

The Town will sell rain barrels at cost at Bass Lake Park as part of the Town's water conservation program. The barrels are expected to be available beginning Saturday, Feb. 16.

Rain barrels are an increasingly popular conservation technique. They collect runoff from rooftops for irrigation and other non-potable uses, reducing reliance on drinking water supplies.

Water Treatment Method Changes During March 2/07/08

Although your water is safe to drink, it may smell and taste more like chlorine in March.

This is because of a month-long change in disinfection that occurs each year. State and federal rules require a balancing of treatment methods for safe drinking water. Many treatment plants throughout the state do this, including the Harnett County plant that supplies Holly Springs.

Deer Management Focus of Workshop 1/31/2008

Living with white-tailed deer in an increasingly urban environment will be the focus of a free workshop Saturday, Feb. 23 at Bass Lake Park.

The Cape Fear River Branch of the Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) will host the four-hour session on how to responsibly manage deer and the area's wildlife habitat.

Thieves Targeting Unlocked Cars 1/11/2008

An increase in thefts from vehicles recently has Holly Springs police reminding residents to lock their cars, even when they're in the driveway at home.

Approximately 15 car break-ins have been reported to Holly Springs police since the first of the year. A dozen of them have been in residential areas, including Sunset Ridge and Cobble Point. The thefts typically occurred in the predawn hours.

Police Educate Parents About Gangs 1/10/2008

Parents of high school and middle school students can get a crash course on gangs Wednesday evening, Feb. 6, at Holly Springs Town Hall.

Holly Springs police and the gang unit from the Wake County Sheriff's Department will give a presentation at 7 p.m. in the Town Council chambers.

Hydrants Flushed During Maintenance 1/11/2008

Water Quality personnel will flush fire hydrants in various places throughout town this month as part of periodic maintenance to ensure that drinking water in the lines stays fresh.

"In light of the drought, we will do the minimum necessary to maintain water quality," said Amy Moore, interim director of the Town's Water Quality Department.
