Thieves Targeting Unlocked Cars 1/11/2008 An increase in thefts from vehicles recently has Holly Springs police reminding residents to lock their cars, even when they're in the driveway at home. Approximately 15 car break-ins have been reported to Holly Springs police since the first of the year. A dozen of them have been in residential areas, including Sunset Ridge and Cobble Point. The thefts typically occurred in the predawn hours. Lt. Anthony Revels said the thief or thieves stole from unlocked cars, pulling car doors to see which ones were open. Most were in driveways. The cars were unlocked. The thief or thieves have taken GPS devices, cell phones, laptop computers, portable media players, even golf clubs from the passenger area of vehicles. Officers urge residents to lock their vehicles after removing belongings or at least concealing them so they don't get stolen. "People get complacent," Revels said. "They live in an area where they think it wouldn't happen, so they get careless." Police are asking residents to call when they see someone who draws suspicion. "They just need to call us immediately so we can get out there to identify these people," Revels said, adding the tip could pay off down the road. Holly Springs police have uniformed and plainclothes officers patrolling the areas to deter thefts. If your car has been broken into, don't touch anything. Call 911 immediately. The Holly Springs Police Department offers home and business security inspection and many other services for a safe community. Holly Springs officers are ready to meet with citizens about neighborhood issues or crime prevention tactics. They can advise citizens on starting or rejuvenating Neighborhood Watch programs.
