Superstreet Concept Explored 4/21/08

Learn about the innovative design for a potential road project along N.C. 55 near New Hill Road. Drop in at a public information workshop Thursday, May 1 at Hunt Community Center from 5-7 p.m.

See conceptual plans for a "superstreet" project in conjunction with proposed commercial and residential development along N.C. 55 Bypass, which is called G.B. Alford Highway.

The superstreet design controls access between side streets on a four-land divided highway. Left turns and through movements are allowed at signalized U-turn points about 800 feet in each direction from existing intersections with side streets.

The state Department of Transportation has proposed the design to improve traffic flow and reduce accidents at intersections.

The impetus for superstreet consideration in Holly Springs is New Hill Place, a commercial and residential project proposed for the northwest quadrant of G.B. Alford Highway and New Hill Road.

The Town Planning Board will review plans for the commercial portion at its monthly meeting April 22. The Town Council could consider them as early as May 6.

The Town Council received a briefing on the superstreet concept at a planning retreat in February. On April 16, Town staff members, a planning board member and a council member went to the Brunswick County town of Leland to see superstreet design on a section of U.S. 17 south of Wilmington.

Hunt Community Center is at 301 Stinson Ave., across from Womble Park.
