Wildfire Smoke Prompts Health Alert 6/12/08

Triangle air quality has reached unhealthy levels because of smoke drifting from the wildfire in eastern North Carolina. People should limit time outdoors, especially those who are most affected by air pollution.

A Code Red warning was issued Thursday for the Triangle area, including Holly Springs.

The state Division of Air Quality said people sensitive to air pollution should avoid moderate exertion outdoors. They include children who are active outside, people who work or exercise outdoors, and those with heart conditions and respiratory ailments such as asthma, bronchitis and emphysema. Everyone else should reduce prolonged or heavy exertion.

Holly Springs Parks and Recreation programs for children were moved inside Thursday and will remain inside on Friday. The Town is also seeking ways to limit smoke exposure for Town employees who work outdoors.

The state has banned outdoor burning.

The state Division of Air Quality has more information on the effects of the wildfire on air quality.
