Delivery of the new rollout carts for recycling is nearing completion. Solid waste customers should call the Town's Public Works Department at (919) 552-5920 if they haven't received one.

Please use the green, 48-gallon carts only for recycling - not for household garbage or yard waste. Household garbage goes in the gray carts that are twice as large.

Putting food scraps and other household garbage into recycling containers contaminates the truckload of recyclables.

The green rollout carts hold three times as much recycling material as the carryout bins they're replacing.

"It should encourage more recycling," Public Works Director Luncie McNeil said.

The Town's garbage and recyclables collector, Waste Industries, uses an automated system to empty rollout carts into its trucks. Crew members emptied recycling bins by hand.

Since collection is now automated, all recyclables must go in one of the green carts. For most customers, one cart should be plenty large enough for recycling. Those who need more capacity can get a second cart for an additional recycling fee of $3.25 per month.

In addition to holding more materials, the recycling carts have lids to keep materials dry and prevent the wind from scattering paper, as sometimes happened with bins.

The recycling service enhancement comes as the overall solid waste fee for Holly Springs' customers goes down.

The Town's new seven-year contract with Waste Industries includes a substantial drop in the monthly fee for household garbage collection. Even with an increase in the recycling charge, the combined solid waste fee dropped to $12.40 per month in July. It was $13.50 per month last year.
