Kids Learn Bike Safety 6/11/08

Holly Springs police will teach children how to ride bicycles safely Saturday, June 21 between 9 a.m. and noon during the Holly Springs Farmers Market at Town Hall. Kids should bring their bicycles and helmets.

The Police Department's quarterly "bike rodeos" stress safety and etiquette. Children learn how to stop at stop signs and to yield the right-of-way as they maneuver through a course lined with traffic cones.

"Any young person in Holly Springs who owns and rides a bike needs to attend this information class, not only to keep them safe but to understand state law as it pertains to bicycle traffic," Lt. Anthony Revels said.

Sgt. Dru Humphries and the department's bike squad are working hard to make the bike rodeo educational and also exciting for children, Revels said.

In May, the Police Department learned it had been awarded a Safe Routes to School grant. The money is being used for such things as signs, cones and other supplies to make the bike rodeos as realistic as possible.
