Rain Barrels Available Mid-February 2/07/08

The Town will sell rain barrels at cost at Bass Lake Park as part of the Town's water conservation program. The barrels are expected to be available beginning Saturday, Feb. 16.

Rain barrels are an increasingly popular conservation technique. They collect runoff from rooftops for irrigation and other non-potable uses, reducing reliance on drinking water supplies.

The first 100 rain barrels have been ordered from RainBarrelUSA. The Town will place additional orders as needed. Sales will begin at Bass Lake when the rain barrels arrive. No pre-orders are accepted.

Customers will pay what the Town pays - $75 for a 60-gallon barrel or $85 for an 80-gallon barrel. For an additional $5, the Town will deliver to Holly Springs residents.

Each rain barrel comes with a brass spigot, two overflow valves that could be used to connect additional barrels, and a screen to keep out debris and insects.

A mere quarter inch of rainfall provides enough runoff from the average roof to fill a typical rain barrel. The barrels provide a way for residents to sustain landscaping in a time of exceptional drought and increasingly stringent watering restrictions.

The record drought led the Town to toughen watering restrictions in November 2007, banning use of irrigation systems and limiting watering by hand to two days a week.

"We're trying to be proactive," Town Manager Carl Dean said in announcing the rain barrel program. The Town continues to examine conservation options, he said.
