Pre-Budget Hearing Held March 18 3/4/08

The Holly Springs Town Council invites local residents and community service agencies to suggest how the Town's tax dollars should be spent in the budget year that begins July 1.

The public hearing will be part of the council's regular business meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 18 in Holly Springs Town Hall at 128 S. Main St. This pre-budget hearing will be an opportunity for citizens to share what programs, services or facilities they would like the Town to start or expand. Citizens can express their priorities for projects or programs and say what they think of existing fees and rates.

“In short, this hearing will give citizens the chance to tell us how they feel their tax dollars should be spent… or, saved,” said Mayor Dick Sears.

Although the Town's new fiscal year begins July 1, the process of formulating the budget starts in early spring. The Town Council must adopt the spending plan before June 30, and a public hearing is required before adoption. However, the required public hearing generally is held in May after a proposed workable budget is formulated by the town manager. At that point, it may be too late for major changes.

Holding a public hearing early in the process, as well as at the end as required by law, allows town officials to give public comments greater consideration.

Speakers will be asked to limit their comments to three minutes each.

Citizens and groups can send written suggestions to the Town Clerk at Town of Holly Springs, P.O. Box 8, Holly Springs, NC 27540. They can also e-mail them to joni.powell@hollyspringsnc.us. All comments received will be forwarded to the Town Council and town manager for consideration.

The deadline to submit written comments is 5 p.m. Monday, March 17.
