Rabies Confirmed in Fox 5/22/08 Previous releases on this topic - First | Second Rabies has been confirmed in a diseased fox trapped May 21 in Sunset Lake Village, Holly Springs police reported. Officers believe it was the same fox that had scratched a homeowner on Tuesday, May 20. She is undergoing rabies prevention treatment. Lt. Anthony Revels said anyone else who might have been exposed should call (919) 557-9111 as quickly as possible. Examples of exposure include bites, scratches or contact with the animal's saliva. The fox may have given birth in recent weeks, Revels said. Homeowners are urged to report any sightings of the fox pups since they could be infected also. Recently, at least two homeowners in other parts of town have reported seeing a fox in their yard or in woods nearby. In one case, an Animal Control Officer trapped a healthy fox and released it in a wildlife area away from any homes. Loss of wildlife habitat is bringing humans and wildlife such as foxes in closer proximity. Animals impaired by rabies or other disease may act unpredictably or aggressively, approaching people rather than running away. Homeowners should not set out food for foxes, raccoons or other wildlife, police said. Securing garbage can lids and removing attractions such as pet food bowls also can help keep wildlife at an appropriate distance.
