Water Treatment Method Changes During March 2/07/08 Although your water is safe to drink, it may smell and taste more like chlorine in March. This is because of a month-long change in disinfection that occurs each year. State and federal rules require a balancing of treatment methods for safe drinking water. Many treatment plants throughout the state do this, including the Harnett County plant that supplies Holly Springs. Kidney dialysis users should be aware that the water may contain chloramines, chlorine, or a mixture during March. During the month of April, the water plant will return to using chloramines for disinfection. Mixtures of chlorine and chloramines may be present during the early days of April. Aquarium owners should use neutralizers that work on chlorine as well as chloramines during this period. Please contact your local aquarium supply dealer if in doubt. Our Water Quality employees will flush lines during this period. Flushing lines may cause minor discoloration of the water. It remains safe to drink. If you have any questions, please contact Amy Moore, interim Water Quality director, at (919) 577-2273.
