Block of Center Street to Become One-Way 12/04/08 Center Street between Main Street and Avent Ferry Road will become a one-way street beginning early next year to in an effort to enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians downtown. The block between Mims Towne Square and Dewar’s Florist Antiques & Interiors will be for westbound traffic turning off or crossing Main Street. Drivers will not be able to pull out of Center Street onto Main Street. Work is scheduled to begin in early January. Completion will take about two months. One reason for the conversion is the sight distance limitation because of the closeness of the Dewar’s building to Main Street. “This project will improve safety and traffic flow as well as add pedestrian-friendly features to this area of downtown,” said Aaron Levitt, engineering project coordinator in the Town’s Engineering Department. Parallel parking spaces, plant beds and park benches will replace the existing eastbound lane on Center Street between Main Street and Avent Ferry Road. The other block of Center Street between Main and Raleigh streets will remain two-way. The work on Center Street is the first phase in a series of roadway improvements that are scheduled to take place along Main Street through next spring and summer.
