Applicants Sought for Planning Board, Board of Adjustment 10/14//08

The Town is seeking applicants for the Planning and Zoning Board and for the Board of Adjustment.

Applications are due Monday, Nov. 10, 2008.

The Town Council will make appointments in December. The 3-year terms begin in January.

Three seats for Town residents are up for appointment on the Planning Board. The panel meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month in the Council Chambers of Town Hall.

The eight-member Planning Board reviews rezoning requests and other development proposals and makes recommendations to the Town Council. The Planning Board also recommends changes to the zoning ordinance and growth plan, working with the council and planning staff. The Planning Board has no judicial authority.

The eight-member Board of Adjustment has seats for one Town resident and for one resident within the Town's extraterritorial jurisdiction up for appointment. The council's ETJ appointment will be forwarded to the Wake County Board of Commissioners, which will make the fill the seat in January.

The Board of Adjustment meets when needed at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month in the Council Chambers of Town Hall.

The Board of Adjustment has quasi-judicial powers and acts separately from the Town Council. The panel holds public hearings and rules on variance requests involving the Unified Development Ordinance. It also hears appeals on decisions by planning staff.

Meetings of the Planning Board and the Board of Adjustment are open to the public.
