December 4-Way Stop Going Up Behind Town Hall 12/28/2007 The intersection of Avent Ferry Road and Ballentine Street behind Town Hall will become a four-way stop beginning Jan. 15. The four-way stop will be a change for motorists on Avent Ferry Road. Currently, only Ballentine Street traffic stops at the intersection. Blood Drive Set for Jan. 3 12/28/2007 Holly Springs Cultual Center will host a blood drive Thursday, Jan. 3 from 9:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. Call the center at (919) 567-4000 to sign up or to get more information. Donors must be in good health, at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. They cannot be on antibiotics and should suspend taking any medicine for at least 24 hours before donating. Registration Under Way for Cultural Center Classes 12/27/2007 Registration is under way for a new season of classes beginning in January at Holly Springs Cultural Center. Want to conquer stage fright, cook up a tasty treat or learn to dance like no one's watching? Holly Springs Cultural Center is home to many creative classes and programs focusing on the visual and performing arts, plus other interests such as cooking or learning Spanish. Town Hall Closed Dec. 24-26 12/17/2007 Town Hall, Hunt Community Center and Holly Springs Cultural Center will be closed for Christmas on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 24-26. Bass Lake Park concessions and visitors' center will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Gates will remain open. Lights on for Womble Park Walkers 12/13/2007 Ball field lights at Womble Park will be on weeknights from 5-8 p.m. The half-mile track around the fields offers a good place for before dinner or after dinner walks. Rabies Found in Raccoon 12/12/2007 A case of rabies in a raccoon found in the Windward Pointe subdivision has Holly Springs police reminding residents to ensure their pets' rabies vaccinations are up to date. The raccoon came in contact with a cat last Friday on the 500 block of Cayman Avenue. The cat's vaccinations were up to date, and it has been quarantined for 10 days. November Simple Precautions Can Stop Thieves 11/21/2007 Holly Springs police say common sense and a few simple precautions can reduce your chances of being victimized by thieves during the holiday shopping season. Thieves are busy, too, this time of year and are on the lookout for victims inside stores and in parking lots. “If you make yourself an easy target,” Police Chief John Herring said, “you're going to be singled out.” Downtown Prepares for Holiday Celebrations 11/15/2007 Downtown Holly Springs will have something old and something new Friday evening and Saturday, Dec 7-8, to help put you in the spirit of the holidays. The new is A Main Street Christmas, a traditional-style celebration Friday evening, Dec. 7, with Christmas carols, hayrides and other festivities culminating in a tree lighting ceremony at Holly Springs Cultural Center. The event lasts from 6-8 p.m. Town Employees Conduct Roadside Cleanup 11/15/2007 Volunteers from Holly Springs Town Hall will hit the road Friday afternoon, Nov. 16, to pick up litter. Approximately 50 employees representing 11 departments will participate in the Town's second roadside cleanup. Senior administrators, planners, engineers, police officers, inspectors and other staff members will don orange safety vests, grab litter pickup sticks, and head out in teams. Town Hall Closed Monday, Nov. 12 for Veterans Day 11/09/2007 Holly Springs Town Hall, Hunt Community Center and Holly Springs Cultural Center will be closed Monday, Nov. 12 for Veterans Day. Angel Tree Project Begins Nov. 19 11/06/2007 The Town of Holly Springs is enlisting citizens to help families in need save their children's Christmas. With the annual Angel Tree project, participants pick a paper angel off the Christmas tree in the lobby of Town Hall. The angels have gift wishes and clothing sizes of children whose families need assistance. Radar Signs Help Police Target Speeders 11/06/2007 Holly Springs police have a new tool for bringing the problem of speeding to light. Four new solar-powered radar signs are being mounted on poles where speeding has been a particular problem. The first went up at the end of October on Oakhall Drive. Holly Springs Police Join Speeding Crackdown 11/06/2007 Driving too fast is always a bad idea. For the two weeks beginning Nov. 12, it will be a particularly bad idea in Holly Springs. The Holly Springs Police Department will have extra officers out patrolling for speeders between Nov. 12 and Nov. 25 as part of the statewide “No Need 2 Speed” campaign. October Rex Healthcare Seeks Community Support in Holly Springs 10/30/2007 Rex Healthcare wants to locate in Holly Springs. Community support could help bring Rex here. Hospital officials are seeking letters endorsing plans for medical facilities that would include an urgent care center and other services in the first phase. Halloween Observed Wednesday 10/29/2007 Trick-or-treaters will be out and about Wednesday, Oct. 31. So Town leaders ask for your help in promoting safety and courtesy on Halloween. Trick-or-treating should be restricted to children under the age of 13. A responsible older person should accompany them. Teenagers should refrain from trick-or-treating. Those who do should not wear masks. Volunteers Needed for Planning Posts 10/18/2007 Applications for the Town Planning Board and the Board of Adjustment are due at the Department of Planning & Zoning by Monday, Nov. 12. The Town Council is scheduled to consider appointments to the citizen panels at its Dec. 4 meeting. See details and an application. Irrigation Ban Starts Nov. 1 10/17/2007 The Town of Holly Springs will ban use of sprinklers and automatic irrigation systems starting Nov. 1 because of record drought. Hand-watering will be allowed only two days a week then. Watering permits for new seed or sod that the Town issues Oct. 17 or afterward will expire Nov. 1. However, residents who received 30-day permits before the Oct. 17 rules change can water until the permit's original expiration date. Council to Discuss Watering Restrictions 10/16/2007 The Holly Springs Town Council will discuss whether to impose more watering restrictions at its Oct. 16 meeting. The city of Raleigh, which supplies some of Holly Springs' water, has decided to ban use of sprinkler systems because of exceptional drought. Holly Springs' current restrictions took effect in early September, when the Town cut the use of sprinklers and automatic irrigation systems from three times a week to once a week. Watering with hand-held hoses or cans is not restricted. Water Customers Cut Usage 10/04/2007 Holly Springs' water customers cut usage in September by more 20 percent compared with August as the Town switched to a once-a-week irrigation limit because of extreme drought. Town officials praised homeowners' high level of compliance with the additional watering restrictions, but stressed the importance of continuing to conserve since no drought relief is in sight. Oct. 11 Workshop to Focus on Town's Future 10/02/2007 Help plan Holly Springs' future at a workshop on the Town's draft Comprehensive Plan Thursday evening, Oct. 11 at Holly Springs Elementary School. September Child Safety Seats Checked 9/24/2007 Want assurance your child's car seat is installed correctly? Visit the Holly Springs Police Department on Saturday, Sept. 29 between 9 a.m. and noon for assistance with proper installation. The Police Department and Safe Kids of Wake County will hold a child restraint seat check at Town Hall, in the rear parking lot off Avent Ferry Road. Holly Springs to Hold Beach Music Day Oct. 7 9/19/2007 Holly Springs Cultural Center and BassLake Area Shag Society will co-host Holly Springs' first Beach Music Day on Oct. 7. Festivities will include “shag” dancing, a matinee showing of the movie “Shag”, a classic car show, and an evening concert with the Craig Woolard Band. Beach Music Day is to be an annual event in Holly Springs. Stinson Avenue Connection to Start 9/10/2007 Construction will begin in September to connect two sections of Stinson Avenue between the Woodcliff subdivision near Womble Park and the Chelsea Woods subdivision off Bass Lake Road. Completion is expected in March 2008. The 800-foot-long section will be two lanes with curb and gutter and sidewalk. The cost of the project, which includes a waterline connection, is about $480,000. UNC TV Taping at Cultural Center Sept. 11 9/7/2007 Holly Springs Cultural Center presents EbzB Productions’ WAR BONDS: The Songs & This performance will be filmed by UNC-TV, North Carolina’s statewide public television network. Live studio audience members may be on camera, and evening dress is encouraged. August Once-a-Week Watering Limit to Start Sept. 6 8/30/07 The Holly Springs Town Council is expected to implement tougher watering restrictions beginning Thursday, Sept. 6 because of severe regional drought. The once-a-week limit will apply to irrigation systems but not to watering with hand-held hoses.
Thirty-day exceptions are available from the Town Clerk for seeding or sodding lawns. Novartis Breaks Ground on Flu Vaccine Facility 8/23/07 The pharmaceutical giant Novartis broke ground in Holly Springs Thursday on a flu vaccine facility that could provide protection for more than half the nation in the event of a pandemic, company officials said. In addition to seasonal flu vaccine, the speed and flexibility of new manufacturing technology will enable Novartis to produce 150 million doses of flu vaccine within six months of a pandemic declaration. Flags Lowered in Tribute to Soldier 8/22/07 Flags at Town of Holly Springs facilities will fly at half-mast through Friday, Aug. 24 in honor of Captain Michael Shean Fielder, 35, of Holly Springs. He died Aug. 19 in Baghdad, Iraq of injuries sustained in a non-combat incident. The Town Council asked that residents, businesses and schools in Holly Springs join the tribute to Captain Fielder by flying flags at half-mast. Rabies Clinic Held Sept. 18 at Womble Park 8/20/2007 Vaccinate your pet for only $7 during a rabies vaccination clinic Tuesday, Sept. 18 from 5 - 7 p.m. at Womble Park on Grigsby Avenue. A licensed veterinarian will give the vaccinations. Pets must be under restraint, such as on a leash or in a carrier. Microchips will also be available so that pets can be identified and returned to their owner if they become lost. Harmless Algae Affecting Taste, Odor of Drinking Water 8/17/07 Some Holly Springs residents may notice that their drinking water has an earthy or musty taste and smell. The water is safe to drink, and taste and odor should improve within days. Hot weather and drought have fostered the growth of algae that release compounds affecting taste and odor. Steps to reduce or eliminate those compounds have been taken at Harnett County's water treatment plant, which provides most of Holly Springs' drinking water. Town Gauges Economic Impact of Novartis 8/13/2007 The flu vaccine facility under construction by Novartis Vaccines & Diagnostics is projected to generate more than $150 million annually beginning in 2010 for the Holly Springs economy, economic forecast models show. Every time Novartis issues a paycheck or purchases goods and services, those dollars circulate through the economy in various ways. The Town's Economic Development Department impact analysis uses common software models to calculate this financial effect on the community. See the analysis. July Holly Springs All-Stars in State Baseball Tournament 7/25/07 The Holly Springs All-Star team in the 11-12 age group is competing in the Statewide Athletics Committee (SWAC) tournament July 26-28 at Womble Park. The Holly Springs All-Star team was runner-up to the Winter Park team from New Hanover County in the SWAC East sectional here last weekend. Two teams from western North Carolina will join the Holly Springs and Winter Park teams for the SWAC tournament. See tournament brackets. Money Magazine Lists Holly Springs Among Top Towns in U.S. 7/16/07 Money Magazine has named Holly Springs one of the best places to live in the country, ranking it 22nd among 100 Great American Towns. "Some places have everything any family could want - economic opportunity, good schools, safe streets, things to do and a sense of community," CNNMoney.com said Monday in announcing the list of the best smaller places to live. 1 Block of Main Street Detoured July 19 7/10/07 Main Street in front of Town Hall will close from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 19 so Town employees can lay temporary pavement markings to test on-street parking options. Motorists will turn at Ballentine Street or Center Street, using Avent Ferry Road for the one-block, one-day detour. Polish Group Visits Town 7/10/07 Local government professionals from Poland toured Holly Springs in early July. It was the second time in recent months that Europeans have visited Town Hall on a study of American municipal government. The Polish contingent was in the area as part of a national tour arranged by the U.S. State Department's International Visitor Leadership Program. Their visit came three months after local officials from the former Soviet Republic of Moldova visited Holly Springs following a meeting in Raleigh. Fans Available for Older Citizens 7/10/07 Free electric fans are available to people age 60 and older who need help cooling their homes this summer. Operation Fan Heat Relief is a long-running project that is managed through the Division of Aging and Adult Services in the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services. Child Safety Seat Clinic Held July 7 7/3/07 The Holly Springs Police Department will host a child restraint seat clinic on Saturday, July 7 from 8 a.m. until noon at Town Hall. The purpose is to minimize the risk of injury to children in traffic accidents by helping parents and caretakers install restraint seats correctly. If you have small children, drop by the back parking lot next to police headquarters the morning of July 7 for the free instruction. June Baseball, Softball All-Stars Represent Town 6/28/07 Baseball and softball all-star teams in the Town's Parks and Recreation program are representing Holly Springs in multiple tournaments this summer. The ages 11-12 baseball all-star team kicked off the competition in the Cal Ripken 12 and under district tournament hosted by the West Raleigh Baseball Association. They played their first game Thursday, June 28 at 6 p.m. against the West Raleigh all-star team. Cultural Center Hosts Festival July 1 6/28/07 Join us for a free outdoor concert and other activities Sunday, July 1 from 4-7 p.m. as we start a new tradition celebrating America's birthday at Holly Springs Cultural Center. Old Town Hall Property for Sale 6/27/07 An old frame house that is part of town history occupies land primed to play a role in Holly Springs' future. The circa-1880s house at 127 N. Main St. served as Town Hall from the late 1980s until 1995. Afterward, it was Public Safety headquarters. Now the Town has put the 1.16 acre site up for sale. Watering Rules Take Effect 6/12/07 The Town of Holly Springs has imposed mandatory alternate day watering restrictions for irrigation systems in light of drought. The ordinance limits use of sprinklers or irrigation systems to three days a week, depending on the address. Exceptions are granted case-by-case for seeding or sodding lawns. Tennis Lessons Now Available 6/12/07 Holly Springs Parks and Recreation is adding tennis to its list of instructional programs for youths and adults beginning June 18. Dean Ness, former U.S.P.T.A. club professional and currently a high school tennis coach, will lead the instructional sessions. They will be held at Holly Springs High School. Town Council Adopts Budget 6/06/07 The Town Council has adopted the 2007-2008 budget, which keeps the same property tax rate while adding police officers, firefighters and other positions to keep pace with growth. The property tax rate remains at 53 cents per $100 valuation on a tax base of approximately Applicants Sought for Recreation Board 6/01/07 The Town is accepting applications to fill an opening on its Recreation Advisory Committee. The citizens committee serves as an advisory panel for the Town Council. The three-year term for the open seat begins July 1. May Survey Gauges Retail Priorities 5/29/07 Take this online retail survey to let us know where you shop now and what kinds of stores, restaurants and other businesses you'd like to see in Holly Springs. Rockin' at the Crossing Returns Thursday, May 31 5/22/07 Kick back with family and friends at free concerts the last Thursday of May, June and July as Rockin' at the Crossing returns to Holly Springs Crossing shopping center. Bass Lake Draft House and DJF Builders are sponsoring the events with assistance from the Town. The concerts will be from 5:30 - 9:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the center, which is at the corner of Holly Springs and Bass Lake roads. Opening the season will be Holly Springs' own GB4 with a variety of rock, funk, blues, and alternative music. Town Hall Volunteers Bag Litter 5/21/07 More than 40 Town employees collected 440 pounds of litter May 18 during a sweep along downtown streets and main roads into Holly Springs. Seven teams of volunteers covered both sides of 10 ¼ miles of roadway, the equivalent of 20 ½ miles. Farmers Market Opens Saturday, June 2 5/21/07 Visit downtown on Saturday mornings starting June 2 for the freshest fruits, vegetables, baked goods and seafood. The Farmers Market in the Downtown Village District will be open from 8 a.m. until noon on Saturdays. It will be in the parking lot next to Town Hall on the 100 block of South Main Street. Deadline Nears for Summer Work Program 5/15/07 Applications are due May 29 for a new Parks and Recreation summer program offering paid work experience for 14-16 year olds. The Summer Work Crew initiative combines paid work with educational field trips related to state and local government. Several luncheons are scheduled with local leaders, giving students the opportunity to meet and greet. Novartis Recruitment Earns Industry Recognition 5/11/07 Novartis' recruitment to Holly Springs has been named one of the “Top Deals in North America” in 2006 by a national trade publication for executives who decide where businesses locate. Site Selection magazine based its Top 20 list on factors including capital investment, the number and value of jobs, and regional impact. The magazine also considered the creativity and speed of the deal, plus the intensity of competition, in deciding which projects to cite. Parks Plan Goes to Council 5/11/07 The Town Council will receive the draft 2007 Parks and Recreation Master Plan at its May 15 meeting. The firm of Design-Based Planning, Inc. will present the plan to the council and the public. The presentation will include a review of the planning process and a synopsis of findings and recommendations. Turtles Rule Saturday, May 12 5/8/2007 Learn all about turtles at the third annual TurtleFest on Saturday, May 12 at Bass Lake Park. Enjoy interactive exhibits, games, crafts and a "Turbo Turtle Race" at the festival, which will run from 1-4 p.m. Admission is free. Council Receives FY 2008 Proposed Budget 5/02/07 Town Manager Carl Dean's 2007-2008 proposed budget keeps the same property tax rate while adding police officers, firefighters and other positions to keep pace with growth. See the budget. The Town Council will hold a work session on the budget May 19. The council is tentatively scheduled to hold a public hearing during its June 5 regular meeting. April Summer Program Combines Work with Learning 4/24/07 The Parks and Recreation Department has a new summer program for high school students combining paid work with seminars and field trips about government. See how to apply. Town Seeks Ideas on Bass Lake Park Addition 4/17/07 The Town is seeking citizens' ideas on how best to use 9 acres that were added recently to Bass Lake Park. Meetings are scheduled for April 25, May 6 and May 30 from 7-9 p.m. at Bass Lake Retreat Center. The public input sessions will kick off work on a master plan for the park addition. Town Initiates Track Out & After School Programs 4/16/07 Registration begins May 1 at Hunt Community Center for an expanded program offering safe, fun activities to children after school and to year-round students on break. The Parks and Recreation Department's after school and track out programs will start in August and run through June 2008. They're for children attending schools in Holly Springs ages 5 - 14. Ground Broken for Main Street Square 4/10/07 Downtown transformation has taken an important step forward with the groundbreaking for Main Street Square, a mixture of homes, shops and offices along N.C. 55 Bypass at a gateway to Holly Springs. As bulldozers cleared for a Wal-Mart across N.C. 55, Town leaders flung earth with gold-painted shovels April 5 to mark the start of the long-awaited mixed use development. By spring 2008, the first residents of Main Street Square should be moving in. Moldovan Officials Tour Holly Springs 4/09/07 Holly Springs extended some Southern hospitality recently to a group of Eastern Europeans who were learning about local government in America. Several local officials from the Republic of Moldova received an impromptu tour of Holly Springs April 3 after a presentation at the N.C. League of Municipalities offices in Raleigh. The Moldovans also visited Washington, D.C. Report Street Light Outages Online 4/02/07 Please use our new online form to report street lights that aren't working. We'll contact Progress Energy, which maintains them. Online reporting is simple. Enter the location and, if possible, the identification number on the pole. March Location Changed for Drop-Off Recycling 3/23/07 Waste Industries has stopped collecting recyclable materials in the parking lot across Ballentine Street from Town Hall. Residents wanting to drop off recyclables can visit a convenience center operated by Wake County Solid Waste Management instead. The county has nearly a dozen such centers, including 6000 Old Smithfield Road at the entrance to the South Wake waste transfer station. Wedding Show Held April 1 at Bass Lake Park 3/09/07 Is matrimony on your mind? Then attend the second annual Wedding & Special Events Show on Sunday afternoon, April 1 at Bass Lake Retreat Center. Admission is free to the show. It will be held from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. Yard Sale, Egg Hunt Highlight Spring Fling 3/07/07 It's time to clean out those garages and attics and get ready for the Community-Wide Yard Sale on Saturday, March 31 at Womble Park. Egg Hunt activities for kids up to age 8 will start at 11 a.m. The actual hunt will start at 1 p.m. on the baseball fields at Womble Park. February Farmers Market Moving Forward 2/19/07 The Town is seeking vendors and a part-time coordinator for Holly Springs' first farmers market. The market is tentatively scheduled to open late this May and operate on Saturday mornings until early November. It will be in the parking lot between Town Hall and Mims Square. Water Treatment Method Changes During March 2/16/07 Your drinking water may smell and taste more like chlorine during March and early April. However, it will remain completely safe to drink. Holly Springs buys drinking water from Harnett County and from Raleigh. Their treatment plants and others across the state change how they disinfect water each March. This annual switch is part of a balancing of treatment methods that state and federal rules require. Town, Novartis Earn New Industry Award 2/07/07 Triangle Business Journal has honored the Town's Novartis project with one of the publication's annual commercial real estate awards. The Town and Novartis received the business journal's SPACE Award in the Economic Development: New Industry category at a banquet Feb. 1. January Town Programs Follow Schools' Icy Weather Policy 1/31//07 If icy weather shuts down Wake County's public schools, the Town's recreation programs and classes close also. Town parks and recreation facilities including Hunt Community Center, Holly Springs Cultural Center, and Bass Lake Park follow the Wake County Public Schools policy on inclement weather. Summer Camp Registration Opens Feb. 3 1/25/07 Residents' registration for children's summer camps begins Saturday morning, Feb. 3 at the Hunt Community Center. The Parks and Recreation Department's summer camp program stresses fun and healthy activities for children ages 5 to 13. Summer camps feature a new theme week, including art, science, sports, exploration, etc. The department also offers sports camps during the year. Forum Highlights Activities for Kids 1/23/07 Need something for the kids to do when they're not in school? Assess the need and explore options during a forum at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at Holly Springs United Methodist Church. The Education Committee of the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce is co-sponsoring the forum with Southwest Wake YMCA. Town Parks and Recreation staff will explain after-school programs and other activities. They'll also gauge interest in programs for year-round students on break. Cultural Center Enjoys Busy First Month 1/16/07 From the sweet, soulful sounds of Gospel Jam to the award-wining theater production of “The Night Before Christmas Carol", Holly Springs Cultural Center has been abuzz with activity since its Dec. 9 opening. “The center is off to a tremendous start, and community support has been overwhelming,” said Bob Klaus, cultural center manager. “Plans call for over 100 special events, classes, concerts and other theater performances in 2007.” Holly Springs Development Update 1/11/07 Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics is continuing site work on a flu vaccine manufacturing facility in Holly Springs Business Park. The company has leased space in Holly Springs while it builds here. Meanwhile, construction is under way on Shoppes at Holly Springs, where Wal Mart is expected to open late this fall. Town Hall Closed Jan. 15 for M.L. King Holiday 1/09/07 Town of Holly Springs offices will close Monday, Jan. 15 for the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. Garbage and recycling will be on regular schedule that day. Town crews will gather Monday and Tuesday yard waste on Tuesday. The Hunt Community Center is closed. Bass Lake Park and Holly Springs Cultural Center will be open. King Holiday Celebration Set for Jan. 14 1/09/07 Holly Springs will hold its 3rd annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Sunday, Jan. 14 with a unity march followed by a program at Holly Springs Cultural Center. Everyone is invited to join the march, which will begin about 3:45 p.m. in the Food Lion parking lot at 517 N. Main St. The march will end at the cultural center. The program will begin at 5 p.m.
