Water Treatment Method Changes During March 2/16/07 Your drinking water may smell and taste more like chlorine during March and early April. However, it will remain completely safe to drink. Holly Springs buys drinking water from Harnett County and from Raleigh. Their treatment plants and others across the state change how they disinfect water each March. This annual switch is part of a balancing of treatment methods that state and federal rules require. Beginning in March, the treatment plants will switch from chloramines to free chlorine. The change will last until mid-April. Kidney dialysis users should be aware that the water may contain chloramines, chlorine, or a mixture during March. During April, water plants will return to the use of chloramines disinfection. Mixtures of chlorines and chloramines may be present during early April. Aquarium owners should use neutralizers that work on chlorine as well as chloramines during this period. Please contact your local aquarium supply dealer if in doubt. Our Water Quality employees will flush lines during this period. Flushing lines may cause minor discoloration of the water. It remains safe to drink. If you have any questions, please contact Thomas Tillage, Water Quality director, at (919) 577-1090 or (919) 577-2273.
