Rabies Clinic Held Sept. 18 at Womble Park 8/20/2007 Vaccinate your pet for only $7 during a rabies vaccination clinic Tuesday, Sept. 18 from 5 - 7 p.m. at Womble Park on Grigsby Avenue. A licensed veterinarian will give the vaccinations. Pets must be under restraint, such as on a leash or in a carrier. Microchips will also be available so that pets can be identified and returned to their owner if they become lost. Wake County Animal Control is holding the clinic with assistance from the Town of Holly Springs. "The main reason we're doing it is to save people money," Town Animal Control Officer Eddie Holland said, adding some pet owners maintain they can't afford the shots. The cost is $7 for each cat, dog or ferret vaccinated at the clinic. Rabies vaccinations at area vet offices typically cost at least $18 and may also require payment for an examination. There is no requirement for dogs to be registered or taxed in the Town of Holly Springs. However, the law requires that dogs and cats be vaccinated against rabies at 4 months of age. The first vaccination is good for one year. Boosters thereafter are good for three years. At the rabies clinic, people must provide written proof of vaccination for the three-year booster shot. As proof of vaccination, veterinarians provide a small metal tag that pet owners must present to Town Animal Control officers upon request. It's a good idea to attach this tag and an identification tag on pet collars in case the animal strays and is picked up. Raccoons, bats and foxes are among the wild animals in which rabies is most often seen in this area. Holland said the most recently reported case of rabies in Holly Springs involved a raccoon about three years ago.
