Christmas Coming to Main Street 11/15/2007

Downtown Holly Springs will have something old and something new Friday evening and Saturday, Dec 7-8, to help put you in the spirit of the holidays.

The new is A Main Street Christmas, a traditional-style celebration Friday evening, Dec. 7, with Christmas carols, hayrides and other festivities culminating in a tree lighting ceremony at Holly Springs Cultural Center. The event lasts from 6-8 p.m.

Return to Main Street on Saturday morning, Dec. 8, for the 13th annual Happy Holly Days Christmas Parade. It starts at 11 a.m.

“There's something in the parade for every age,” said Town Clerk Joni Powell, who organizes the parade with Public Information Assistant Barb Koblich.

The deadline to enter the parade is Monday, Nov. 26. Entry forms are in Town Hall at 128 S. Main St. You can also find the entry form and other information at www.hollyspringsnc.us. See the About Holly Springs section or search “parade.”

The idea for A Main Street Christmas evolved from a similar celebration that the Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce held about four years ago.

“People kept commenting how wonderful it had been and were we going to do it again,” Koblich said.

Parking for A Main Street Christmas will be available in lots near Town Hall, where Santa Claus plans an appearance. Meanwhile, Mrs. Santa will read to kids at Holly Springs Cultural Center. It is a block from Town Hall on West Ballentine Street.

Inside the cultural center lobby, Georgia Beck will perform from 6-7 p.m. Performances on the center's outdoor stage will start at 7 p.m. and feature Stars Youth Theater, the Holly Springs Concert Band Ensemble and the Springs Singers.

Mayor Dick Sears will arrive with Santa at 7:50 p.m. The tree lighting outside the cultural center will follow.

Holly Springs Cultural Center and the Wake County branch library adjoining it opened last December after the 12th annual Happy Holly Days parade.

"It seems like just yesterday we were rushing to complete construction, and here it is a year later with a calendar filled with wonderful arts and entertainment events,” said Cassie Jones, the center's assistant manager and event coordinator. “Our goal of having something for everyone could not be more true than this December with more than a dozen special holiday events.”

From the 2nd annual Christmas Concert with the Concert Band to the zany Stacy Clearman Christmas rock show for kids, this holiday season is chock full of exciting events to bring family and friends together.

Admission to A Main Street Christmas is free. Tickets for other holiday events are on sale now, including Mystery Dinner Theater, bluegrass and jazz concerts, and holiday puppet shows. Holly Springs School of Dance will present its very popular holiday cabaret.
