Flags Lowered in Tribute to Soldier 8/22/07 Flags at Town of Holly Springs facilities will fly at half-mast through Friday, Aug. 24 in honor of Captain Michael Shean Fielder, 35, of Holly Springs. He died Aug. 19 in Baghdad, Iraq of injuries sustained in a non-combat incident. The Town Council asked that residents, businesses and schools in Holly Springs join the tribute to Captain Fielder by flying flags at half-mast. Fielder, a field veterinary service officer, entered the military in June 2000 and was assigned to the unit in September 2006. He deployed to Iraq that month. Fielder had not been on any other previous deployments. His military schooling includes the Army Medical Department Officer Basic Course and the Veterinary Clinic Proficiency Course. Civilian education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from N.C. State University. Fielder's awards and decorations include the Navy Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon. A memorial service is scheduled for Aug. 25 in Iraq.
