December Survey Gauges Health Care Needs 12/22/06 The Town is surveying residents about medical needs in light of increasing interest from the healthcare industry about locating in Holly Springs. Town officials have received increasing interest recently from the healthcare sector regarding land for potential development. As a result, the Town is conducting the survey online to find out what citizens desire in medical services. Survey Finds Strong Support for Farmers Market 12/11/06 A survey this fall that drew nearly 600 responses shows strong support for opening a farmers market in downtown Holly Springs. See an executive summary containing analysis of responses. The month and a half long survey was offered online. Paper copies were available at various locations in town. Christmas Parade, Cultural Center Opening Occur Dec. 9 12/05/06 Stride into the holiday season Saturday, Dec. 9 at the 12th annual Happy Holly Days Christmas Parade down Main Street. The parade begins at 11 a.m. near the Food Lion store. It ends at Town Hall. Big Sweep for Leaves Under Way 12/01/06 Town crews are asking for patience as they complete a town-wide sweep for leaves before returning to neighborhoods to collect what has been raked since the first pass. A sweep through Holly Springs may take three weeks. So if a Public Works crew goes through your neighborhood before you've had a chance to rake your leaves, just leave them at the curb. We'll get them on the next pass through town. November Angel Tree Helps Needy Children at Christmas 11/21/06 The Town of Holly Springs is enlisting your help in ensuring that children from needy families share the joy of the holidays. The Town is participating again this year in an Angel Tree collection of toys and clothing. Recipients are Holly Springs school children whose families are going through difficult times financially. New Town Cultural Center, County Library Open Doors Dec. 9 11/17/06 The new Holly Springs Cultural Center has announced an impressive lineup of special events, performances and arts classes as it prepares for a Dec. 9 opening. The inaugural season already is packed with more than 100 theatrical and musical presentations, movie showings, classes and other bookings. Look for additional announcements in the weeks ahead. Nov. 15 Meeting Set for Landfill Citizens' Committee 11/07/06 Are you interested in serving on a citizens advisory committee for the landfill being built in Holly Springs or just want to know more about the landfill? Then come to Holly Springs High School on Wednesday, Nov. 15 for a meeting that Wake County is sponsoring to get the citizens panel started and to distribute information. Growth Plan Meeting Held Nov. 16 11/07/06 Citizens are invited to Hunt Community Center on Thursday evening, Nov. 16, to discuss a plan being prepared to help guide growth in Holly Springs. The meeting from 6-8 p.m. will be an opportunity to comment on solutions to issues that citizens have raised. The issues came up during a July 12 public meeting and in responses to surveys sent to residents during September and October. October Town Council to Receive Update, Approve Budget on Stinson Avenue 10/30/06 The Town Council is scheduled to receive an update Nov. 7 on a project to connect two sections of Stinson Avenue and provide a vital link between the Village District and Bass Lake Road. The schedule calls for seeking construction bids this month. Construction is expected to begin in December and be completed by mid-summer 2007. Survey Gauges Interest in Farmers Market 10/27/06 The Town is surveying residents to gauge interest in opening a farmers market in downtown Holly Springs. Entries Accepted for Christmas Parade 10/26/06 We're lining up entries for the 12th annual Happy Holly Days Christmas Parade down Main Street on Saturday, Dec. 9. Parade entries are due Nov. 27. There is no fee. For an entry form, drop by Town Hall or download a form to fill out and return. Halloween Observed Tuesday, Oct. 31 10/25/06 The Town of Holly Springs does not change the date for trick-or-treating, so it's always Oct. 31. If you choose to participate, please ensure your children are in safe costumes that do not obstruct their vision and allow motorists to see them easily. A responsible older person should go along. HollyFest Held Saturday, Oct. 28 10/20/06 Enjoy food, music, crafts, fireworks and other family fun at our annual HollyFest celebration Saturday, Oct. 28 at Womble Park. The festival will run from 10 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. General admission is free. Everyone is invited Masonic Lodge Part of Holly Springs' History 10/20/06 Holly Springs will unveil its first historical marker in a ceremony Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. at Masonic Lodge #115 on Raleigh Street in Holly Springs. Mayor Dick Sears and Master of the Lodge Rick Barton will speak at the ceremony. Barton and Nathan Williams, a long-time member of the lodge, will unveil the marker. An open house and tour of the lodge will follow. Life-Saving Equipment Donated in Child's Memory 10/17/06 The Holly Springs Fire – Rescue Department has received donations of life-saving equipment in memory of a 7-year-old boy who died in a vehicle accident in August. Six automatic defibrillators have been donated through the Davis Davenport Memorial Fund to supplement the three devices that already were on fire trucks. Volunteers Needed to Fill Planning Posts 10/17/06 The Town of Holly Springs is seeking applicants for two citizen committees that advise the Town Council on proposed development. Applications are due by Monday, Nov. 13, 2006 to the Departm ent of Planning & Zoning. The Town Council is scheduled to make appointments Dec. 5. Football Games Scheduled 10/12/06 The Holly Springs Blue team plays Saturday, Oct. 14 at East Wake High School in Wendell. Games rained out Oct. 7 will be played Sunday, Oct. 15 at Holly Springs High School. Holly Springs Monitoring Apex Fire; No Evacuation Anticipated Holly Springs Town officials are closely monitoring the chemical fire in Apex, but do not anticipate any need for evacuation of Holly Springs residents. If there is any need for evacuation, Holly Springs residents will receive notice through a number of means, includeing TV and radio news reports. Wake County Emergency Management will also call residents' homes by phone if they are told to evacuate. Bass Lake Day Held Saturday, Oct. 7 10/06/06 Celebrate the third annual Bass Lake Day at Bass Lake Park Saturday, Oct. 7 with all kinds of interactive environmental displays and activities. The event is on, rain or shine. Progress Energy Conducts Controlled Burning of Forests 09/19/06 Controlled burning on Progress Energy property is the source of smoke that many Holly Springs residents have reported seeing in recent days. State forestry officials manage the burning, not the Town. Holly Springs Fire Chief Cecil Parker said the controlled burning occurred on 375 acres near the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant. The burning is part of a regular program by Progress Energy to reduce the risk of wildfire on its property. Touring Cyclists Depart Holly Springs 10/05/06 More than 1,000 bicylists rode out of Holly Springs Thursday morning after spending the night in tents at Womble Park. A concert and other festivities highlighted the Town's welcome to the Cycle North Carolina tour. See a slide show. Holly Springs was one of a half-dozen overnight stops for the cyclists on a week-long ride from the mountains to the coast organized by N.C. Amateur Sports. Herring Sworn In as Holly Springs Police Chief 10/04/06 John Herring was sworn in as Holly Springs' police chief Tuesday evening after serving three months as interim chief. Mayor Dick Sears administered the oath during the Town Council meeting in front of family, police officers and other guests. Herring's wife, Katherine, and daughters Taylor and Kaleigh, stood with him as he took the oath. September Cultural Center Organizing Volunteers, Meeting with Arts Groups 09/29/06 Meetings have been scheduled with those who would like to volunteer at the new Holly Springs Cultural Center or help develop a network for the performing arts.
Cycling Tour Visits Holly Springs Oct. 4 09/28/06 Join your neighbors and 1,200 bicycling guests Wednesday, Oct. 4 for a free concert in Womble Park as Holly Springs hosts Cycle North Carolina. The Craig Woolard Band headlines our welcome to the spandex-clad crew. Bicyclists are camping in Womble Park overnight during a week-long ride from the mountains to the coast. Get the Latest on Development in Town 9/25/06 There's a lot happening in Holly Springs these days. Parks Plan Meeting Set for Oct. 10 09/25/06 Join us at Holly Springs Elementary School at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 10 and give your ideas on planning for parks and recreation programs. Four Officers Join Police Department 09/22/06 Four newcomers officially joined the ranks of Holly Springs police Thursday morning during a swearing in ceremony at Town Hall. The four include two officers from area police departments, a transfer from Holly Springs Fire Department, and a recent graduate of the Basic Law Enforcement Training program. Parks & Recreation Begins Online Registration 09/19/06 You can now sign up over the computer for many Holly Springs Parks & Recreation programs, classes and activities. The department is offering online registration, beginning with fall listings. Read descriptions, register and pay for preschool classes, adult dance lessons, Spanish classes, senior programs and much more. Register at your convenience from any computer connected to the Internet. Volunteers Sought for Recreation Advisory Committee 09/19/06 The Town is accepting applications for the Recreation Advisory Committee. The nine-member panel meets monthly and advises the Town Council and Parks & Recreation Department. The Recreation Advisory Committee meets at 7 p.m. the second Thursday of each month in the Council Chambers of Town Hall. Meetings are open to the public. Registration Under Way for HollyFest 5K 09/12/06 Get your HollyFest celebration off to a quick start by participating in the HollyFest 5K on Saturday morning, Oct. 28. The 5K race begins at 8 a.m. at the ball fields in Womble Park. A 1-mile fitness walk and a "Tot Trot" for kids 10 and under get under way minutes afterward. Development Update Session Held on Sept. 20 9/08/06 There's a lot happening in Holly Springs these days. Visit Town Hall on Sept. 20 and learn the latest about new businesses and Town facilities that are on the way. The public is invited to a development information session from 6 - 8 p.m. Sept. 20 for details on projects that are under construction or in the planning stages. Pipe Replacement Prevents Water Problem Recurrence 09/08/06 Pipe replacement on two streets in Holly Glen subdivision has prevented xylene from recurring in the drinking water of homes nearby, test results continue to show. A contractor replaced about 200 feet of pipeline there this summer after the Town determined that improper ductile iron pipe was the source of elevated, but not harmful, levels of xylene. The chemical came from coating on the pipe. New Cultural Center Offers Volunteer Opportunities 09/06/06 Are you interested in volunteering at the new Holly Springs Cultural Center? There are many fun and meaningful ways to serve, even before the center opens this December a block from Town Hall. The project represents the first partnership of its kind in Wake County - a town cultural center connected to a new Wake County library. HollyFest Vendor Applications Sought 09/05/06 The Town will accept applications from food vendors and for the Children's Corner until Sept.29 for the annual HollyFest celebration at Womble Park. HollyFest 2006 will be held Saturday, Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. until 8:30 p.m. Admission to the festival is free. The Holly Springs Chamber of Commerce is handling applications from arts and crafts vendors and for booths in the Business Expo. August Ernesto Prompts Watch for Flash Flooding 08/30/06 Holly Springs is on watch for flash flooding as weather forecasters warn the remnants of Tropical Storm Ernesto could dump 3 to 6 inches of rain Thursday and Friday. The heaviest rain is expected Thursday evening and Friday morning. The center of the storm's remnants is forecast to pass over Holly Springs about 8 a.m. Friday if Ernesto stays on track. Town's Widening of Avent Ferry Road Nearly Done 08/30/06 The Town has finished its portion of Avent Ferry Road widening except for a final layer of asphalt and permanent striping. The Town is handling widening of the road from Autumn Park subdivision northward to N.C. 55 Bypass. The final layer of asphalt will be added after realignment of the Piney Grove - Wilbon intersection, which will occur this fall. Robbery Occurs at Automatic Teller Machine 08/22/06 Holly Springs police are advising caution for customers at automatic teller machines in light of a robbery Aug. 18 in the parking lot of Oak Hall shopping center. A teen-aged girl using an automatic teller machine there was robbed shortly before noon by a man who had what appeared to be a gun. The victim was not injured. Holly Springs Team Wins Baseball Championship 08/02/06 Holly Springs' 11-12 Year-Old All-Star Yellow Jackets won the Statewide Athletics Committee Championship during the weekend of July 29-30 in Burlington. It was the first time that a Holly Springs team has won the SWAC championship. July Town Offers Hunt Center as Refuge from Extreme Heat 07/31/06 Residents who cannot cool their homes adequately may escape the heat this week at Hunt Community Center on Stinson Avenue across from Womble Park. The Town has designated a room there as a "cooling station" from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily through Friday. Air conditioning, water, television and comfortable places to sit are in room 9. Holly Springs Police Welcome 2 New Officers 07/28/06 Officers Macy Baltrus and Christopher Singletary are the newest members of the Holly Springs Police Department. Lightning Knocks Out Hunt Center Phones, Computers 07/28/06 Telephones and e-mail service remained out at the Hunt Center on Friday after lightning struck the flagpole there during a thunderstorm Thursday afternoon. Lockley Road Open Again 07/26/06 Lockley Road has reopened after being closed to through traffic for several weeks because of concerns about erosion. Last week, the state Department of Transportation removed barricades that prevented crossing over a culvert. The state closed the bridge in mid-June after the remnants of Tropical Storm Alberto washed away material around the culvert near the edge of the pavement. Gov. Easley Announces Novartis to Build in Holly Springs 07/18/06 The pharmaceutical giant Novartis will build a manufacturing facility in Holly Springs employing approximately 350 people to produce flu vaccines using new technologies, Gov. Mike Easley announced Tuesday. The manufacturing facility will go on 167 acres in Holly Springs Business Park off N.C. 55 Bypass. Construction will begin in early 2007, with the first phase scheduled for completion by late 2008. Easley said Novartis' investment would be at least $267 million and eventually could reach $600 million. Town Honored for Excellence in Financial Reporting 7/06/06 The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada has awarded Holly Springs a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. The award is for the Town's Comprehensive Annual Financial Report. An impartial panel said Holly Springs' financial report demonstrates a "spirit of full disclosure" that clearly communicates the Town's financial story. June Growth Plan Meeting Set for July 12 6/29/06 Planning for the Town's explosive growth will be the subject of a community meeting Wednesday, July 12 from 6-8 p.m. at Hunt Community Center. A new Comprehensive Plan is being developed. It will serve as a policy guide and future land use strategy to help Town officials update the zoning code. The plan will provide vision for growth management, economic development, housing, transportation, recreation and open space. Town Creates Separate Police & Fire Departments 06/28/06 The rapid growth of recent years has prompted Holly Springs to move forward with transforming its Public Safety Department into separate Police and Fire departments. Public Safety Chief Cecil Parker will become chief of the Town's Fire - Rescue Department, which includes Emergency Medical Services. Police Lt. John Herring has been named interim police chief. The reorganization takes effect July 1. Slots Remain for Agility Camp, Football & Fall Baseball 06/21/06 Registration continues in Parks & Recreation youth programs for football, fall baseball and for a week-long speed and agility camp in late July. "Track Out" Programs Available for Year-Round Students 06/21/06 Need something fun for your Holly Grove Elementary or West Lake student to do while on year-round calendar break next school year? Registration continues until July 25 for the Parks and Recreation Department's program for students at those schools who are on break between year-round sessions. Second Rockin' at the Crossing Concert Held June 29 06/21/06 The Coastline Band performs Thursday, June 29 in the second of three free outdoor concerts this spring and summer at Holly Springs Crossing shopping center. Bass Lake Park Open as Cleanup Continues 06/20/06 Bass Lake Park is open with less parking as cleanup continues from the remnants of Tropical Storm Alberto. Boat rentals have been suspended, but resumption of other programs and activities began the Saturday after the storm. The lake trail has some damage, but is passable and open to hikers. Fire Station Dedication Set for June 28 06/17/06 Enjoy homemade ice cream and tour Holly Springs' new fire station at the dedication ceremony on Wednesday, June 28 from 5-7 p.m. Bass Lake Park Cleans Up After Flooding, Prepares to Reopen 06/15/06 Bass Lake Park is set to reopen this weekend despite parking lot damage from Wednesday's flooding. Town employees continued cleanup and inspections on Thursday, pleased with how well Bass Lake Park appears to have weathered the remnants of Tropical Storm Alberto. Town Council to Hold June 6 Public Hearing on Annual Budget 06/02/06 The Town Council will hold a public hearing at its June 6 meeting before adopting the annual budget. Town Manager Carl Dean has recommended keeping the property tax rate at 53 cents per $100 worth of property. Town Invites Residents to "Talk the Walk" 06/02/06 The Town is surveying residents for ideas on making Holly Springs better for walking. By taking the online questionnaire, residents can help the help the Town assess needs and set priorities. Recreation Advisory Committee Seeks Applicants 06/02/06 Are you interested in helping shape the direction for Parks and Recreation offerings in Holly Springs? The Town is accepting applications for the Recreation Advisory Committee. The nine-member committee meets monthly and advises the Town Council and Parks & Recreation Department. May Town's Animal Control Laws Now Among Strongest in Area 05/23/06 The Town of Holly Springs is looking out for its most vulnerable residents – dogs and other pets and animals. The Town Council voted unanimously May 16 to make its animal control ordinance one of the most comprehensive in the area. Rockin' at the Crossing Concerts Resume May 25 05/19/06 Kick back with the whole family and friends at free concerts the last Thursday of May, June and July. Rockin' at the Crossing returns to Holly Springs Crossing shopping center. The Craig Woolard Band performs at the May concert. Bass Lake Draft House and DJF Builders are sponsoring the events with assistance from the Town. The concerts will be from 5:30-8:30 p.m. You may want to bring a chair. April Womble Park Goes to the Dogs 05/02/06 See a photo gallery from this year's Dog Day in the Park at Womble Park on Saturday, April 29. Dog lovers and canines of all breeds gathered for exhibits, demonstrations, games, music, prizes and more. Wake County Commissioners Delay Landfill Decision 05/02/06 The Wake County Board of Commissioners has scheduled a June 5 vote on whether to build a landfill in Holly Springs at N.C. 55 Bypass and the future Interstate 540 interchange. The board voted 4 to 3 on May 1 to delay a decision. Holly Springs leaders are asking the county to reserve the 471-acre tract for economic development and ship garbage out of the county. Special Town Council Meeting Set for Wednesday, April 26 04/25/06 The Holly Springs Town Council will hold a special meeting at 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 26 in the Council Chambers of Town Hall. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss potential revenue sharing proposals and to receive updates on a number of economic development issues. Wake County Poised to Vote on Landfill 04/24/06 Wake County commissioners could vote as early as May 1 on building the long-planned South Wake Landfill in Holly Springs at N.C. 55 Bypass and the future Interstate 540 interchange. Parks & Recreation Survey Available Online 04/03/06 A new online survey asks what people like about living and playing in Holly Springs and what additional recreation programs or facilities are needed. The survey is part of a continuing effort to develop recreation programs that are fun, safe, affordable, and meaningful. March Spring Fling Held Saturday, April 8 03/24/06 Bring family and friends to Womble Park on Saturday, April 8 to enjoy Spring Fling activities for the whole family. Emergency Exercise Held Thursday in Holly Springs 03/22/06 Holly Springs police and firefighters are holding an emergency preparedness exercise on Thursday in conjunction Wake County Emergency Management and nearby municipal agencies. The exercise begins at approximately 3 p.m. Thursday and involves multiple locations in and near Holly Springs over several hours. Signs will be posted. Garbage & Recycling Day Changes Coming in April 03/20/06 Garbage and recycling collection will switch to a new day for most Holly Springs residents beginning the week of April 3. Waste Industries, which provides solid waste collection to homes in Holly Springs, is changing the collection day for about three-fourths of customers here. The company is also redoing routes in nearby towns. Citizens' Ideas Needed to Make Town Easier for Walking 03/17/06 Join Town staff at a workshop Thursday, April 20 at Bass Lake Retreat Center. They're looking for suggestions on making Holly Springs friendlier for pedestrians. Drop in anytime from 4-7 p.m. Where do we need sidewalks and greenway trails? What deters people from walking? These are some of the questions the Town wants residents to address. Homeowners Can Help Ensure Timely Yard Waste Pickup 03/15/06 Bundle tree limbs and separate them from other yard waste for faster curbside collection, Town Public Works crews remind homeowners. Crews vacuum curbside piles of leaves, shrubbery trimmings and similar yard debris. So piling tree limbs separately is a must. Water Not a Worry in Holly Springs 03/13/06 As March Madness sweeps over college basketball, an early spring has many fans seeking their own home court advantage with a starting lineup of grass seed and fertilizer. Unlike in some places, lawn watering anytime is not a foul in Holly Springs. The Town has no watering restrictions. Art & Costume Contests Highlight Annual Turtle Festival 03/06/06 April 1 is April Fools Day. But in Holly Springs, it's also Turtle Day. The second annual Turtle Festival will be Saturday, April 1 at Bass Lake Park from noon until 4 p.m. Celebrate the turtle with crafts and displays. Meet live turtles and turtle experts Town Upgrades Ball Fields, Automates Sports Scheduling 03/3/06 As the time to "Play ball!" draws closer, the Holly Springs' Parks and Recreation staff is working indoors and outdoors to prepare for baseball and softball seasons. February Town's Erosion Control Program Receives State Award 2/24 The N.C. Sedimentation Control Commission has given the Town of Holly Springs' sedimentation and erosion control program an award for overall excellence. It is the second such award in three years. Water Treatment Method Changes During March 2/20/06 Although your water is safe to drink, it may smell and taste more like chlorine in March. This is because treatment plants change how they disinfect water each March. State and federal rules require a balancing of treatment methods for safe drinking water. Water plants throughout the state do this. Town Council Seeks Budget Ideas at March 7 Hearing 2/20/06 How do you want your tax dollars spent in the budget year that begins July 1? That's what the Holly Springs Town Council and Town Manager Carl Dean want to know during preparation on the 2006-2007 Town budget. Telephone Books Collected in Town Hall Parking Lot 2/17/06 Got old phone books you want to get rid of? Just drop them off until the end of April at the parking lot beside Town Hall. Community Yard Sale Set for April 8 2/17/06 Registration is under way for a community-wide yard sale that will take place during Spring Fling on Saturday, April 8. Holly Springs High School Faculty to Meet with Families 2/7/06 Students and parents are invited to meet with faculty and staff of Holly Springs High School and to get information about the new school. The gatherings will be at Holly Ridge Middle School in March. January Phone Service Restored for Public Works Customer Service 1/19/06 Customers can again reach the Public Works Department by phone. High winds interrupted telephone service there yesterday. Calls are being rerouted automatically until completion of repairs. Customers can reach Public Works at the usual number - (919) 552-5920. Development Workshop Set for Jan. 25 1/18/06 The Town will hold an all-day seminar Jan. 25 to help people better understand how to go about developing property in Holly Springs. The free workshop is geared toward developers, engineers, surveyors, land planners, builders, design professionals and business owners who are interested in steps and requirements for development approval. Additional K-9 Team Completes Training, Begins Work 1/10/06 A German shepherd named Diesel is the newest member of Holly Springs Public Safety Department. Diesel and his handler, Officer Chris Poston, graduated from K-9 training academy last Friday and have begun work, giving Holly Springs police two K-9 teams again. King Celebration March Prompts Traffic Advisory 1/3/06 Citizens celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will march down Main Street on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 15 en route to a service at the First Baptist Church of Holly Springs.The march will begin at 3 p.m. from the Food Lion parking lot at the corner of Main Street and Oakhall Drive.
