Town Invites Residents to "Talk the Walk" 06/02/06

The Town is surveying residents for ideas on making Holly Springs better for walking.

Town staff and consultants from Greenways, Inc., are midway through drafting a comprehensive pedestrian plan. They've put together an online questionnaire to help assess needs and set priorities.

"People can help by filling out the survey," said project coordinator Darin Eyster of the Engineering Department. "The more we get back, the more information we'll have to work with to complete a better plan."

Town staff and consultants want to know how often people walk, where they'd like to walk, and what might hinder them from going there on foot. Where do we need sidewalks and greenway trails? How should they be paid for? Those are some of the questions for discussion.

Drafting of the pedestrian plan got under way with a public input session in April. Town staff and Greenways, Inc. will hold a second public meeting in August. A draft of the plan should be ready this fall.

Examples of what the plan may address include:

• Creating an interconnected system of pedestrian corridors
• A pedestrian environment that provides confidence and safety to its users
• Promoting walking as an alternative mode of transportation
• Providing pedestrian access to underserved areas of the community

Eyster is encouraging more residents to weigh in on how to make Holly Springs better for pedestrians by filling out the questionnaire.

"The more people who participate," he said, "the better idea we'll have where the needs are greatest."
