Citizens' Ideas Needed to Make Town Easier for Walking 03/17/06

Wish you could stretch your legs more often instead of stretching your wallet for gas to stay cooped up in your car?

Join Town staff for a workshop Thursday, April 20 at Bass Lake Retreat Center. They're looking for suggestions on making Holly Springs friendlier for pedestrians. Drop in anytime from 4-7 p.m.

Where do we need sidewalks and greenway trails? What deters people from walking? These are some of the questions the Town wants residents to address.

Town staff and consultants are developing a comprehensive pedestrian plan with a grant from the N.C. Department of Transportation. They'll hold a second public workshop in August as the plan begins to take shape. It should be finished by early next year.

"I would like to gain a better understanding of citizens' needs relating to pedestrian issues in Holly Springs and incorporate these into our final pedestrian plan," said Darin Eyster of the Engineering Department, project coordinator.

These are examples of what the plan may address:

  • Creation of an interconnected system of pedestrian corridors
  • A pedestrian environment that provides confidence and safety to its users
  • Promoting walking as an alternative mode of transportation
  • Providing pedestrian access to underserved areas of the community

For more information about the workshop or the pedestrian plan, contact Eyster at (919) 557-2921or e-mail darin.eyster@hollyspringsnc.us.
