Lockley Road Open Again 07/26/06

Lockley Road has reopened after being closed to through traffic for several weeks because of concerns about erosion.

Last week, the state Department of Transportation removed barricades that prevented crossing over a culvert. The state closed the bridge in mid-June after the remnants of Tropical Storm Alberto washed away material around the culvert near the edge of the pavement.

With the state's permission, the Town's Public Works Department made temporary repairs last month to prevent further erosion and protect the road.

Lockley Road is a loop road that connects to Holly Springs Road and Sunset Lake Road. Hurricane Fran washed out the crossing in September 1996, interrupting traffic flow within the neighborhood. At the time, Lockley Road was outside Town limits.

The bridge reopened in 2004 after the state replaced the drain pipe underneath with a much larger culvert. The Town is slated to assume maintenance responsibility for Lockley Road.
