Nov. 15 Meeting Set for Landfill Citizens' Committee 11/07/06 Are you interested in serving on a citizens advisory committee for the landfill being built in Holly Springs or just want to know more about the landfill? Then come to Holly Springs High School on Wednesday, Nov. 15 for a meeting that Wake County is sponsoring to get the citizens panel started and to distribute information. Wake County staff members will be available from 5-7 p.m. to answer questions about the landfill operation. They'll have maps and other materials. The organizational meeting for the citizens' advisory committee will begin afterward and is expected to last about 45 minutes. County staff members will be available afterward for more questions about the landfill or the committee. The purpose of the meeting is not to debate whether the landfill should be built. “That's a separate issue,” said Mayor Dick Sears, who continues to oppose the landfill. Wake County commissioners voted 5-2 last June to move forward with it over the objections of Holly Springs Town leaders and many residents. The landfill is expected to begin operations in late 2007 or early 2008. The South Wake Landfill Citizens' Committee will be similar to the citizens panel advising on the North Wake Landfill. That landfill will close after the one in Holly Springs opens. Members of the South Wake Landfill Committee will assist Wake County in making decisions on non-technical issues. They will also be a communication conduit between county officials and landfill neighbors. The panel's role will be advisory only. Current issues for the panel include screening for the landfill and what the entrance should look like. County officials anticipate monthly meetings, but stress that the citizens comprising the committee will decide how often to meet and how to structure the panel. “This is their committee, not the county's committee,” Jim Reynolds, director of Wake County Solid Waste Management, said last week. “We're not going to be running them.”
