Additional K-9 Team Completes Training 1/10/06

A German shepherd named Diesel is the newest member of Holly Springs Public Safety Department to report for duty.

Diesel and his handler, Officer Chris Poston, graduated from K-9 training academy last Friday and have begun work, giving Holly Springs police two K-9 teams again. See details.

Poston and Diesel completed 15 weeks of training in a K-9 school run by the Raleigh Police Department. The training meets U.S. Police Canine Association standards.

Officer Keith Denton and a German shepherd named Leza are the Town's other K-9 team. They had been the department's only K-9 team since Poston's former teammate, Ranger, retired. Ranger continues to live with Poston.

K-9 team duties include tracking lost persons or suspects in crimes, detecting illegal drugs and searching buildings.

"If it were your child we were looking for or somebody had broken into your home, you'd definitely want that resource," Poston said.

Poston noted that Town Manager Carl Dean and Public Safety Director Cecil Parker have strongly supported Holly Springs' program.
