Garbage & Recycling Day Changes Coming in April 03/22/06 Garbage and recycling collection will switch to a new day for most Holly Springs residents beginning the week of April 3. See the new schedule listing areas and neighborhoods by day of service. Waste Industries, which provides solid waste collection to homes in Holly Springs, is changing the collection day for about three-fourths of customers here. The company is also redoing routes in nearby towns. “It's all growth-related,” Town Manager Carl Dean said Monday, explaining that the changes would help Waste Industries operate more efficiently and minimize future price increases. Town crews handle yard waste and are not changing when that is collected, Public Works Director Luncie McNeil said. Last Friday, Waste Industries mailed letters to customers explaining how route changes would, or would not, affect them. (See a sample letter.) Next week, crews will put decals on containers that display the new collection day. See decals - Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday Brent Kirchhoff, branch manager for Waste Industries, anticipates it will take a couple of weeks for people to adjust to the new schedule. During that time, homeowners can call if they put garbage out on the wrong day. "We're going to try and cover those things if they'll give us a call. That's our expectation," Kirchhoff said Monday. "We're certainly going to do our best to make sure everything gets picked up." Homeowners whose garbage and recycling is not collected can call Waste Industries at (919) 662-7100. They can also call the Town's Public Works Department at (919) 552-5920 to have a collection request relayed. As the area has grown, Kirchhoff said, garbage collection routes have become jumbled. A Waste Industries truck driver might collect garbage in one town Monday and in a different one on Tuesday. By tightly configuring routes and keeping drivers working in the same area all week, Kirchhoff said, it will be easier for drivers to return to homes if garbage is skipped. The route changes are the largest that Waste Industries has made in the area in at least several years. "Our hope is that we won't have to re-route again [for] a number of years," Kirchhoff said.
