Life-Saving Equipment Donated in Child's Memory 10/17/06

The Holly Springs Fire – Rescue Department has received donations of life-saving equipment in memory of a 7-year-old boy who died in a vehicle accident in August.

Six automatic defibrillators have been donated through the Davis Davenport Memorial Fund to supplement the three devices that already were on fire trucks.

“What this allows is for us to put a matching defibrillator on every piece of equipment the department owns,” Fire Chief Cecil Parker said.

Because of the donated defibrillators, whoever arrives first at heart attack or other emergency call will have the device.

“That's the whole idea of the first responder program,” Parker said, adding a defibrillator would be placed at Town Hall and hopefully at Hunt Community Center.

The devices that the department received are the home defibrillator variety. They retail for about $1,500, Parker said. The devices come with written and voice-recorded step-by-step instructions. They will not apply an electrical impulse unless the patient needs it, Parker said.

“They put these in shopping malls. They put them on airplanes. They put them everywhere now,” Parker said, adding some are purchased for the home.

“The more out there, the better,” Parker said.

Crescent State Bank handles donations to the Davis Davenport Memorial Fund.
