New Town Cultural Center, County Library Open Doors Dec. 9 11/17/06 The new Holly Springs Cultural Center has announced an impressive lineup of special events, performances and arts classes as it prepares for a Dec. 9 opening. The inaugural season already is packed with more than 100 theatrical and musical presentations, movie showings, classes and other bookings. Look for additional announcements in the weeks ahead. “Our goal is to offer something for everyone,” said Bob Klaus, cultural center manager. “With these first event announcements, we are off to a good start.” The Town-owned cultural center and Wake County branch library attached to it are on West Ballentine Street , a block from Town Hall in downtown Holly Springs. The opening of the cultural center and library will coincide with the Happy Holly Days Christmas Parade down Main Street on Saturday, Dec. 9. After a 1:30 p.m. ribbon-cutting, enjoy refreshments and other festivities during an open house lasting until 5 p.m. The celebration continues the evening of Dec. 9 with a holiday pops concert. The Concert Singers of Cary Chamber Choir performs in the first event of the cultural center's Great Performance Series. Tickets are on sale now. Here's a sampling of what else is coming soon to Holly Springs Cultural Center:
For events with an admission charge, tickets are available online through Etix.com by visiting www.hollyspringsnc.us or culturalcenter.hollyspringsnc.us. Beginning Dec. 9, you can get tickets in the box office in the lobby and avoid service charges. The Town is forming alliances with area non-profit groups that will call the center home. These include the Springs Singers Children's Choir, Springs Dance Company, Triangle Blues Society, Triangle Jazz Society, Cary Players, Friends of Bluegrass, Raleigh Symphony Orchestra, Raleigh Jazz Orchestra, and the Holly Springs Concert and Jazz bands. In addition to performances, the center will also offer a wide variety of classes and special programs led by some of the Triangle's most talented artists and teachers. Monthly Just 4 Kicks dance parties on Saturday nights will give people of all ages the opportunity to shag, swing, line dance or just boogie in a family friendly, no smoking environment. Klaus wants the cultural center to be a warm and welcoming place for the community to gather. “We have more ideas than time right now,” he said. “But citizens are encouraged to continue to give us their thoughts for new events and programs.” The Cultural Center is managed by the Holly Springs Parks and Recreation Department, which surveyed citizens on what types of events people would want at the center. Community theater topped the list. We Act for You, a Holly Springs group led by local theater professional Cindy Verian, plans four theatrical productions featuring mystery and comedy in the first season. Holly Berry Players, a theater group for children formed recently by area arts leader Sherry Grant, has an alliance with the cultural center. The center is also starting its own youth theater troupe, “Stars – Holly Springs Youth Theater.” Carolina Puppet Theater of Raleigh will perform regularly. “Programming for children is an important part of our mission statement and the original vision of the cultural center,” said Parks and Recreation Director Len Bradley. The mix of offerings at Holly Springs Cultural Center will ensure there is plenty to interest people of all ages. Cooking classes, wine tasting events, even baby disco parties are on the list of ideas being pursued. “As our slogan says," Klaus noted, "'Smile. Create. Celebrate.'
