Town Offers Hunt Center as Refuge from Extreme Heat 07/31/06 Residents who cannot cool their homes adequately may escape the heat this week at Hunt Community Center on Stinson Avenue across from Womble Park. The Town has designated a room there as a "cooling station" from 8 a.m. until 9 p.m. daily through Friday. Air conditioning, water, television and comfortable places to sit are in room 9. With record-breaking temperatures possible here this week, Mayor Dick Sears began arranging for the room in light of deaths during the recent heat wave in California. "It prompted me to recommend a cooling station for those citizens here who may have that need," he said Monday morning. Town officials encourage residents to check on neighbors, friends and family who may be especially vulnerable to the heat. These include the elderly and those in poor health, plus people who don't have air conditioning or can't afford to use it enough to stay cool. Residents who require a place to escape the heat and cannot get to the Hunt Center may call the Town's Police, Fire & Rescue Communications Center at (919) 557-9111 to arrange for transportation. Temperatures are expected to reach the mid 90s to around 100 degrees during the next several days across much of central North Carolina. Heat indices could exceed 105 degrees. Later this week, Town officials will assess the need for keeping the cooling station open beyond Friday. Get information about heat-related illness and how to protect yourself.
