Progress Energy Conducts Controlled Burning of Forests 09/19/06

Controlled burning on Progress Energy property is the source of smoke that many Holly Springs residents have reported seeing in recent days. State forestry officials manage the burning, not the Town.

Holly Springs Fire Chief Cecil Parker said the controlled burning occurred on 375 acres near the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant. The burning is part of a regular program by Progress Energy to reduce the risk of wildfire on its property.

“They're very, very good about keeping us informed,” Parker said, adding the Fire Department received notice beforehand.

The controlled burning occurs outside the Town's jurisdiction. Parker said smoke has traveled at least as far as the area of State Road 1010 and U.S. 401.
