Test Results Show Water Safe in Holly Glen 12/27/06

Water tests in a portion of Holly Glen subdivision show that levels of xylene are barely detectable and that the water is safe to drink.

Drinking Water Advisory Issued in Portion of Holly Glen 12/22/05

Residents in a portion of Holly Glen subdivision have been asked not to drink or cook with tap water while the Town investigates how the chemical xylene apparently entered the water system there recently.

Preliminary laboratory results in that area indicate that xylene levels are elevated, but still below the state's allowable limit.

Information Sessions Set on ETJ Expansion 12/13/06

The Town of Holly Springs is holding two public information sessions to explain how expanding the Town's planning jurisdiction would affect property owners in that area. The sessions will be Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005 and Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006 from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. in Town Hall.

Dog Owners Asked to Abide by Leash Law 12/12/06

Holly Springs police are reminding pet owners about the leash law after receiving complaints of dogs behaving aggressively toward people out walking.

11th Annual Happy Holly Days Parade is Saturday, Dec. 10 12/02/05

Come to downtown Holly Springs on Saturday morning, Dec. 10 and let the holiday spirit pass right by you.

More than 70 entries will take part in the Happy Holly Days Parade, which will begin at 11 a.m. near Oakhall Drive and the Food Lion parking lot. The parade will last about an hour, ending at Town Hall.

Recent Fires Prompt Fireplace Safety Advice 12/02/05

Hot coals that apparently escaped the chimney heavily damaged a home on Happy Hunting Trail over Thanksgiving weekend.

Fireplace ashes left on a front porch damaged the exterior of a house on Oak Hall Drive that same weekend.

Public Safety Chief Cecil Parker suspects the rising cost of home heating fuels may lead more people to use fireplaces this season.

Applications Accepted for Recreation Advisory Board 11/16/05

The Town of Holly Springs is accepting applications to fill a vacancy on its Recreation Advisory Board.

Nov. 8 is Election Day in Holly Springs 11/07/05

Voters go to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 8 to fill three seats on the Holly Springs Town Council. The mayor is also up for re-election, but is unopposed.

Polls are open from 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m.

Holly Springs Under Voluntary Water Conservation Measures 11/07/05

Holly Springs is not under mandatory water restrictions. Even so, Town officials ask that customers use water wisely.

Although Raleigh imposed mandatory conservation measures Nov. 1, those rules do not cover Holly Springs. The Town gets most of its water from Harnett County and has sharply reduced how much it buys from Raleigh.

Applications Taken for Help with Heating Bills 11/03/05

People who will need help paying for heat this winter can apply starting Monday, Nov. 7, 2005 for a cash payment from the state.

The application period ends Nov. 18, 2005. Those who qualify for assistance will receive a check by mail in early February.

Groundbreaking Set for Holly Springs Library & Cultural Center 11/01/05

A ceremony marking the start of construction on the Holly Springs Library & Cultural Center will be held Thursday, Nov. 3, 2005 at 4 p.m. on West Ballentine Street, a block from Town Hall.

HollyFest 5K Results Announced 10/31/0510/31/05

The HollyFest 5K was held Saturday, Oct. 28, 2005 in conjunction with the HollyFest celebration at Womble Park. The event included a 1-mile fitness walk as well as a "tot trot" for children 6 and under. See 5K results.

Traffic Accident Causes Power Outage 10/26/05

Approximately 2,500 homes and businesses in Holly Springs lost power Wednesday afternoon after a motorist ran off Raleigh Street, crashed into power poles and overturned, the Public Safety Department reported.

Pre-Season Meetings for Youth Basketball Scheduled 10/21/05

Youth basketball skills assessment and coaches' meetings for the winter season will be held in early November at the Hunt Center.

Youth basketball practice starts the week of Nov. 14. Games begin Saturday, Dec. 17.

Registration Under Way for Trunk Art Contest at HollyFest 10/20/05

Decorate your car trunk for the TrunkFest contest at the HollyFest celebration Friday evening, Oct. 28 at Womble Park.

Volunteers Needed to Fill Planning Posts 10/19/05

Applications are due Nov. 14, 2005 for openings on two citizen advisory boards - the Planning & Zoning Board and the Board of Adjustment.

The Town Council is scheduled to make the appointments at its Dec. 6 meeting.

Monday, Oct. 31 is the evening for Halloween trick-or-treating in Holly Springs .

The Town Council asks that those who celebrate Halloween do so safely while preserving the peace for those who choose not to participate.

Angel Tree Provides Way to Help Needy Children 10/18/05

Be an angel and help a Holly Springs child have a merry Christmas.

The angel tree project collects gift wishes of needy children. You can become that child's “angel” and help however you can, providing one or more gifts on the child's list. Forty children who live and go to school in Holly Springs are being helped this year.

To participate, visit Holly Springs Town Hall at 128 S. Main St. beginning Nov. 22. Take an ornament from the angel tree in the lobby. Each ornament has the wish list for a particular child and includes details such as clothing sizes. Return gifts unwrapped to the angel tree by Dec. 14.

Registration Under Way for Holiday Parade 10/12/05

Got plans for Saturday morning, Dec. 10?

Take part in the Holly Springs holiday parade beginning at 11 a.m. through downtown. We're registering all types of entries – professional and homemade floats, vintage cars, bands, walking or dancing groups, horseback riders, pets, etc. Entry forms are at Town Hall. There is no fee.

Limited Edition Holiday Ornaments for Sale 10/11/05

Consider adding a Holly Springs police station ornament to your collection as you prepare to deck the halls this holiday season. This limited edition collector's item is the second in a series of keepsake ornaments commemorating Holly Springs points of interest.

The 2005 edition ornament features the recently-restored Seagroves Drugstore, which now houses Public Safety headquarters. This 2 5/8-inch ornament depicts the building with holiday garland, wreaths and red bows on a mother of pearl, cream colored background. The reverse has black lettering that reads, “Holly Springs Series / 2nd Edition 2005 ” between holly leaf artwork.

Section of Ballentine Street Closes for Library, Cultural Center Project 9/30/05

The section of West Ballentine Street that runs through a small park will close Monday, Oct. 10 for construction of the Holly Springs Library & Cultural Center .

That section of West Ballentine Street will remain closed until the library and cultural center are completed in late 2006. The road will be realigned through the park property.

West Ballentine Street traffic headed to Avent Ferry Road will be rerouted onto West Elm Street . Detour signs will be posted.

Holly Fest Celebration Set for Oct. 28-29, 2005 9/22/05

Registration Under Way for Holly Fest 5K Race. 9/22/05

The Holly Fest 5K will be held Saturday, Oct. 29, 2005, starting and ending at the baseball fields in Womble Park. The event includes a 1-mile fitness walk as well as a Tot Trot for children 6 and under.

Bass Lake Day Held Saturday, Oct. 1 9/16/05

Learn about the environment and enjoy a free dinner and concert during Bass Lake Day. Canoes and boats are available for rent first-come, first-served from 8 a.m. until an hour before sunset. Fishing is free with rods and reels available for loan. The concession stand will be open with drinks and snacks. Event T-shirts are available for purchase.

Town Council to Hold Hearing on Downtown Plan 9/12/05

The Holly Springs Town Council will hold a public hearing Sept. 20 on a plan to guide development downtown. The council may vote on the plan at the same meeting. The Village District Area Plan illustrates a commitment to retaining small town charm, even as Holly Springs experiences rapid population growth.

Holly Springs Storm Aid Donations Exceed $34,000 9/11/05

Volunteers raised nearly $11,600 Saturday during the Storm Aid celebration at Womble Park, bringing to $34,345.99 the total raised for the community's hurricane relief effort. In addition, volunteers on Saturday collected $868 for Humane Society efforts to help pets and other animals that the storm left fending for themselves.

Water Remains Safe to Drink Despite Musty Odor, Taste 9/7/05
Problems with the taste and odor of town drinking water should diminish within a few days. The culprit has been algae blooms in the reservoir at the regional water plant in Harnett County. However, the water remains safe to drink. It continues to meet all state regulations.

The Western Wake Partners Policy Advisory Committee will hold its first meeting Monday, Sept. 19, 2005 at 11 a.m. in Cary Town Hall.

Labor Day Alters Yard Waste Pickup 8/25/05
Town Hall and the Hunt Center will be closed Monday, Sept. 5 for Labor Day. Trash pickup remains on schedule, but yard waste will not be collected on Sept. 5. Monday yard waste customers will be served Tuesday, Sept. 6, along with Tuesday yard waste customers.

Annual Wastewater Report Now Available 8/25/05
The 2005 Wastewater Performance Report for the Town of Holly Springs is available online. The report will be published in the Aug. 31 edition of The Fuquay-Varina Independent and the Sept. 1 edition of The Holly Springs Sun.

Pet Clinic Sept. 21 at Womble Park 8/21/05
Pet owners can have their furry loved ones vaccinated against rabies for only $5 during a pet clinic scheduled for 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Womble Park.

Holly Fest Children's Area Vendors Wanted 8/17/05
The town of Holly Springs is seeking vendors for the children's area of its annual town festival, Holly Fest. Update to 10-Year Town Plan to be Presented at Aug. 16 Meeting 8/08/05
At the Aug. 16 Town Council Meeting, the Planning & Zoning Department is to present an update of the Town's 10-Year Comprehensive Growth Plan, which was originally adopted in 1998. The update will incorporate new maps of the expected future Town boundaries, also called full build-out boundaries, which show what lands Holly Springs may one day encompass. The plan helps the Town evaluate proposed development in Town and addresses various elements of growth, ranging from land use and open space to utilities and economic development.

Council Enacts Town Parking Code 8/05/05
At its Aug. 2 meeting, the Holly Springs Town Council enacted a Town parking code. The code limits where oversized vehicles can park, prohibits all vehicles from parking along Town thoroughfares and within 15 feet of any mailbox or intersection, and sets limits on parking in privately-owned or public lots.

Parks & Recreation Holds Open House Aug. 18 8/04/05
The Parks & Recreation Department is holding an open house from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, at the Hunt Center. Residents are invited to meet the Parks & Recreation staff, take advantage of free access to the fitness room, listen to music by the Holly Springs Town Band, and enjoy free cookies and punch.

Avent Ferry Closed Near Main Street Intersection Aug. 1-5 7/29/05
Avent Ferry Road will be closed Monday, Aug. 1, through Friday, Aug. 5, from its intersection with Main Street/NC 55 and Ballentine St. as a Town contractor works on the Avent Ferry tie-in with Earp Street.

Diverse Assortment of Art and Cultural Workshops for Groups to be Offered through Parks & Recreation Department 7/28/05
The Holly Springs Parks & Recreation Department is launching a new assortment of workshops – ranging from art and literary workshops to ones that result in participants earning a scout badge or learning a new art-related technology. The workshops, under the Art for Everybody program, cater to groups looking to participate in organized activities that develop a specific skill. What's so unique about this assortment of workshops is that the majority of workshops aren't scheduled at a specific time; the group interested in the workshop sets the time and date of the workshop – a time and date that is convenient for the group. And, workshops can be geared toward different age groups, allowing the greatest benefit to participants.

Free Electric Fans Provided to Seniors through State Program 7/26/05
Do you know of a senior who needs help staying cool this summer? The NC Department of Health and Human Service's Operation Fan/Heat Relief program provides electric fans to elderly citizens who have the greatest need for relief from the heat.

The Holly Springs Town Council will hear public comments on its proposal to enact a Town parking policy at its next meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 2.

Road Construction Progresses through Town 7/20/05
Many residents will be thrilled at the end of summer when Town-funded construction is completed on several roadways. Currently, construction on two major intersections along Holly Springs Road is underway. As construction on these projects nears an end, the Town continues making and planning more road improvements in other sections of Town.

After eight hours of testing in April, Holly Springs Engineering Department Senior Engineer Kendra Stephenson received her professional engineer license this summer.

Plan Holly Springs’ Downtown Future 7/15/05
Join fellow Town residents, staff and consultants as work continues on a development plan to enhance downtown Holly Springs. The Village District Area Plan will give more details to guide downtown growth than the Town-wide development plan currently in place. Share your ideas on how you would like to see downtown develop by participating in an upcoming meeting.

Town Council to Hear Public Comments Before Deciding on Firearms Town Code Change 7/13/05
The Holly Springs Town Council will hear public comments on its proposal to change the Town Code regarding firearms, including BB guns, at its next meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 19. Following a public hearing, the Town Council will consider adoption of an ordinance that would require persons to be a minimum of 200 feet away from any adjacent property line before discharging a BB gun or other non-explosive weapon within the Town limits.

Fitness Room Adopts New Early-Bird Hours 7/12/05
There's a new reason for Holly Springs residents to rise and shine! New early-bird hours are in effect at the Hunt Community Center fitness room. The fitness room will open at 5:30 a.m. – a half hour earlier than before – on weekdays to accommodate an increasing number of early-morning exercisers.

Holly Springs Personal Trainer to Compete in World Triathlon Championship 7/12/05
Residents wanting to use the services of Holly Springs Parks & Recreation Department Personal Trainer Jackie Miller will have to be patient during the month of August. Miller, a member of the USA Triathlon Team, will be traveling overseas to compete in the International Triathlon Union Long Distance Triathlon World Championship in Denmark.

The evening of Friday, July 15, Bass Lake Park is the place to be for outdoor activities. Evening events include a free concert, fishing until 9:30 p.m. and an organized evening paddle.

Statue of Liberty Bike Coming to Holly Springs Public Safety6/27/05
The Statue of Liberty Bike is coming to Holly Springs in time for Independence Day, and Holly Springs Public Safety is inviting locals to come to police headquarters on Sunday, July 3, from 4-6 p.m. to view the motorcycle.

Filing for November Ballot Begins at Noon Friday, July 1 6/27/05
The one-month filing period for elected office in Holly Springs begins at noon Friday, July 1, and will close promptly at noon Friday, Aug. 5.

Town Offices Closed, Trash and Yard Waste Schedules Affected, This July 4 Holiday 6/23/05
Town Hall and the Hunt Community Center will be closed on Monday, July 4, for Independence Day. Yard waste will not be collected on Independence Day; Monday yard waste customers will be served the following week.

Plan Holly Springs' Downtown Future 6/23/05
Work on developing a plan to guide downtown development in Holly Springs began with a public meeting held Wednesday, June 22. At the meeting, more than 50 residents gathered and gave town staff and consultants their ideas for the future look and substance of downtown Holly Springs. But, opportunities for residents to weigh in on their ideas for downtown are not over by a long shot. Residents unable to attend the meeting can go to the Town website at www.hollyspringsnc.us/downtown.htm to share ideas with town staff or get information about attending an upcoming meeting as the plan continues to develop.

Town Budget Set for 2005-2006 Fiscal Year 6/22/05
During its June 7 meeting, the Holly Springs Town Council adopted the budget for the 2005-2006 fiscal year. The more than $13 million budget provides for the continued high level of Town services, stores money in reserve funds for future infrastructure expansion and capital improvement projects, and calls for four new positions. In addition, the utility fund budget will raise the base fee for water and sewer services by $.50 each per month.

Residents Invited to Review Floodplain Maps at Town Meeting 6/20/05
Holly Springs residents are invited to a public meeting to view and learn more about new state Flood Insurance Rate Maps that more accurately delineate the Cape Fear River Basin 100-year floodplain, as defined by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The 100-year floodplain consists of land near rivers and streams that has a 1% chance of being flooded per year. The Cape Fear River Basin in Holly Springs consists of lands near waterways generally west of Main Street and Avent Ferry Road.

Holly Springs Co-Sponsors Workshop on New Development Approach 6/20/05
The Town of Holly Springs is co-sponsoring a free workshop on Friday, June 24, from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. for local developers, builders, engineers and landscape architects to learn more about low impact development – a new approach to designing neighborhoods that offers higher environmental standards, denser development, and lower development and maintenance costs for installing stormwater management infrastructure. These cuts in costs affect both the developer and the town that maintains the infrastructure. The approach also allows developers to more easily meet new stormwater management standards set by state and federal environmental agencies.

Rockin' at the Crossing with The Usuals to Kick Off Summer 6/13/05
Locals are invited to enjoy the first-ever Rockin' at the Crossing on Thursday, June 30, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. This free block-party bash in the parking lot in front of the Bass Lake Draft House in the Holly Springs Crossing mall will kick off the summer with live music by The Usuals and cool beverages from the Draft House.

Residents Invited to Design Downtown Holly Springs 6/13/05
Holly Springs residents are invited to an interactive meeting to participate in the creation of a detailed plan that will guide the future development of downtown Holly Springs. The meeting will be held Wednesday, June 22, from 7-9 p.m. at the Hunt Community Center.

Holly Springs Water Quality Remains Safe 6/13/05
Throughout the year, the Town of Holly Springs runs routine tests on the drinking water supply to ensure that its high quality is maintained. And, every year, the Town Department of Water Quality releases the Consumer Confidence Report to inform residents of the results of the tests. This year's report shows that the Town drinking water remains safe and well within the standards set by regulatory agencies.

Holly Springs Prepares to Meet Future Wastewater Needs 6/10/05
Along with the growing population in Holly Springs comes an ever-increasing demand for Town services. About one family moves to Holly Springs every day, and future population estimates continue to show the Town growing in leaps and bounds, with potentially 19,000 residents by 2007. The Town of Holly Springs recently completed paving the one of the last Town-maintained gravel roads, Estes Lane. Estes Lane is located at the eastern end of Grigsby Avenue, which runs past Womble Park near downtown Holly Springs.

Town Awarded $24,500 Grant to Develop Plan to Improve Pedestrian Passageways 5/24/05
The Town of Holly Springs recently was awarded a $24,500 grant from the state Board of Transportation to develop plans for improving pedestrian passageways throughout Town. Of 36 municipalities to apply for funding, Holly Springs was one of 18 applicants to receive a piece of the nearly $400,000 in funding statewide.

Groundbreaking for 118,000-Square-Foot Facility in Holly Springs This Wednesday 5/23/05
The Town of Holly Springs is hosting a groundbreaking ceremony at noon this Wednesday, May 25, for Office Furniture Marketing, Inc. (OFM). The 118,000-square-foot OFM facility will mark the construction of the largest building in the Holly Springs Business Park in 15 years. The facility will serve as a warehouse and distribution center for the office furniture company.

Town Offices Closed, Concert to Be Held, for Memorial Day 5/19/05
Town Hall and the Hunt Community Center will be closed on Monday, May 30, for Memorial Day. And, locals are invited to enjoy a free Memorial Day at Womble Park on Sunday, May 29.

Town residents are invited to shape the future Holly Springs Veterans Park by sharing their ideas for its development at a meeting Thursday, June 9, at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall Council Chambers. While not an entirely blank canvas – existing features at the 10-acre park include a small pond and 1,200-square-foot house – the property has room for other park developments. And, town officials are looking for Holly Springs residents' input on what they would like those developments to be.

Town Recreation Advisory Board Openings 5/19/05

Cooper Tools Donates $1,500 in Tools to Parks & Recreation 5/13/05
Thanks to a donation of more than $1,500 in tools, the Holly Springs Parks & Recreation Department will be even handier at repairing park grounds, facilities and equipment. The donation, made by Cooper Tools of Apex this month, included an assortment of tools – from five tool sets valued at $80 each to vice grips, tape measures to marker flags, a measuring wheel to soldering irons, and more.

Ticks – Be on the Lookout for Them 5/11/05
Along with the arrival of warmer weather and longer days comes the risks of tick bites and contracting the diseases some ticks carry. Ticks can be found anywhere, from grassy front yards to wooded areas, and the insects can transmit several different diseases – some of which can be fatal. However, steps can be taken to help prevent tick bites and reduce the chance for contracting a tick-transmitted disease.

Third-Annual Kids' Appreciation Day Offers Free Ice Cream and More 5/4/05
At its most recent meeting, the Holly Springs Town Council proclaimed Saturday, May 14, as the third annual Kids' Appreciation Day. To celebrate, children are invited to an ice cream social sponsored by the Town of Holly Springs and the Holly Springs Kiwanis Club. The social will be held Saturday, May 14, from 2-4 p.m. at the Womble Park band shelter and is free of charge to children and their families and friends.

Officials Dub Trip to Boston Networking Success 4/29/05
Networking, marketing Holly Springs to Wake County movers and shakers, and learning about how other municipalities face challenges were the top objectives attained by three Holly Springs officials during a recent trip to Boston. The three-day trip, part of an annual Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce outing to a different municipality each year, grouped Holly Springs Mayor Dick Sears and Councilmen Ernie Pearson and Chet VanFossen together with approximately 100 Wake County government and private-sector leaders last week.

Dickinson Fills New Recreation Programs Superintendent Position 4/28/05
With a passion for children, recreation and customer service, Johnny Dickinson was the perfect hire to fulfill a new position as recreation programs superintendent of the Holly Springs Parks & Recreation Department. The new position oversees the programming aspects of athletics and leisure programs, in addition to the community center and special events.

HollyFest Scheduled for Last Weekend in October 4/21/05
The annual weekend-long Holly Springs town festival has a new name, a new date and a new commitment to being even more community-centered. A group of local leaders – including representatives from civic groups, churches, the chamber of commerce, and Town staff – met this week and determined that the annual town festival will be known from now on as HollyFest: Celebrate Holly Springs. And, the festival permanently will be held the last weekend in October. This year's HollyFest will be Friday, Oct. 28-Sunday, Oct. 30.

NCDOT To Delay I-540 Construction Despite Holly Springs Council Resolution 4/11/05
Despite the Holly Springs Town Council unanimously adopting a resolution opposing delay in the construction of the I-540 Western Wake Expressway, the NC Department of Transportation (NCDOT) recently released a spending plan that postpones construction on the portion of the expressway that connects with NC 55 near Holly Springs . Instead beginning in 2008, the NCDOT is calling for construction on the leg of I-540 that will connect NC 55 in Holly Springs with Interstate 40 to 2012.

Holly Springs Ranked the Safest North Carolina Municipality with More Than 10,000 People 4/7/05
In a recent study based on crime numbers from the FBI, Holly Springs was ranked the safest North Carolina municipality with a population of more than 10,000 people. The study, conducted by The Shelby Star, compared the state's raw crime numbers for 55 North Carolina municipalities. The numbers for violent crimes, such as murders and rapes, in each municipality were then divided by that municipality's population and multiplied by 1,000. Holly Springs was ranked as the top safest city in total violent crime.

Hot Boxes Now Optional for Single-Family Residential Holly Springs Backflow Prevention Devices 3/31/05
At the March 15 meeting of the Holly Springs Town Council, board members agreed that residents who use backflow prevention devices should not be required to provide protective covers, called hot boxes, for them.

Holly Springs Public Works Employees Gain State Certification 3/29/05
After a week-long course and an exam, two Town of Holly Springs Public Works crew leaders responsible for maintaining the Town's water distribution and wastewater collection systems recently gained state certification for their jobs.

Zip Code Modification Successful for Holly Springs Residents with Fuquay Zip Codes 3/28/05
Recently, Holly Springs staff encouraged the US Postal Service to conduct a survey of properties inside Holly Springs Town limits that have Fuquay-Varina or Apex zip codes. The survey would allow residents to determine if they would like their zip code changed to the Holly Springs 27540 zip code.

Community Band Forming in Holly Springs 2/28/05
If you're driving by the Hunt Community Center one evening and hear some foot-tapping music, it's most likely not coming from the radio in the Fitness Room. It's more likely that the music is from a group of locals forming a community band. The sounds of everything from horns and woodwinds to percussion and bass guitar can be heard Thursday evenings at the Hunt Center as the group practices concert band, jazz, popular, patriotic and seasonal music.

Summer Camp Slots Fill Quickly 2/16/05
Last year, on the first day of summer camp registration, the Parks & Recreation Department was swamped with parents registering children for the fun and affordable week-long camps. The Town reaped a record one-day revenue. This was a new year, the department implemented a new registration system, and a new record one-day revenue – almost double last year's earnings – was made.

$371,200 Awarded to Town for Downtown Sidewalks 2/7/05
Downtown Holly Springs will soon be more pedestrian friendly, thanks to $371,200 in federal clean-air money awarded to the Town by the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization in January. The project is set to be formally approved this June by the NC Department of Transportation, which last year awarded the Town a $200,000 grant for a downtown streetscape project that includes aesthetic improvements and installation of wide, brick sidewalks that will run along both sides of Main Street from Avent Ferry Road/Center Street south to Raleigh Street.

Woodmen Donate Flag to Town 1/31/05
Last week, Steve Macon of the Woodmen of the World donated an American flag to the Holly Springs Parks & Recreation Department. The 5x8 foot flag, valued at about $65, will fly in front of the Hunt Community Center.

$5 Rabies Vaccinations to be Given Feb. 12 at Womble Park 1/31/05
Calling all dog and cat owners! The Town of Holly Springs is cosponsoring a rabies vaccination clinic Saturday, Feb. 12, from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Womble Park picnic shelter. For only $5 per animal, certified veterinarians with the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine will be administering the shots.

Telephone Book Recycling Station To Be Set Up Near Town Hall1/31/05
The Town of Holly Springs will host a telephone book recycling station Feb. 14 through April 11 as part of Wake County 's 14th annual Telephone Book Recycling Program. The depository will be located in the paved parking lot on the southeast corner of the intersection of Ballentine St. and Avent Ferry Rd. This parking lot is located directly across Ballentine Street from the Police Station.

Town Switches to Chlorine Water Disinfection During March 1/31/05
Beginning March 1, 2005, the Town of Holly Springs will switch from chloramines water disinfection to free chlorine. The switch will last until April 1 and is being coordinated with an identical switch by Harnett County and the City of Raleigh. State and federal regulatory agencies mandate this switch.

Holly Springs Town Hall administration offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 17, for Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. During the holiday, garbage and recycling collection will remain on schedule. There will be no yard waste, bulky items or leaf collection on the holiday; these services will resume the following weeks. Holly Springs Celebration to Commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. 1/4/05
On Sunday, Jan. 16, Holly Springs is celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Cosponsored by the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee and the Town of Holly Springs, the celebration will consist of a march and a program featuring Daniel T. Blue Jr. Esq., former speaker of the NC House of Representatives. The public is invited to attend both events.

Free Mulch Giveaway Begins Jan. 18 1/4/05
For the first time ever, Holly Springs is allowing residents to enjoy the benefits of recycled Christmas trees. After collecting discarded trees from residential curbsides, the Town Department of Public Works will shred the trees into mulch, which residents can pick up free of charge beginning Jan. 18, as long as supplies last, from Town property in the Holly Springs Business Park on the west side of the NC 55 Bypass.
