Zip Code Modification Successful for Holly Springs Residents with Fuquay Zip Codes
Residents with Apex Zip Codes to be Surveyed Later This Year

Recently, Holly Springs staff encouraged the US Postal Service to conduct a survey of properties inside Holly Springs Town limits that have Fuquay-Varina or Apex zip codes. The survey would allow residents to determine if they would like their zip code changed to the Holly Springs 27540 zip code. The Postal Service decided to conduct two surveys – one for Holly Springs residents with Fuquay-Varina zip codes and one for residents with Apex zip codes.

The Fuquay-Varina survey was conducted in December, and the majority of survey respondents were in favor of the zip code modification. Recently, the US Post Office announced that the zip code change to the Holly Springs 27540 zip code will be effective as of April 2, 2005.

Letters from the US Post Office confirming the effective date, along with the correct zip + 4 routing number, were mailed to all affected postal customers on March 18. The current zip code will be valid - and all mail sent to the current zip code will be forwarded - for a specified time. Additional details on the timeframes for this service were included in the letter from the Post Office.

The Holly Springs Planning & Zoning staff compiled a detailed website that includes information about the zip code modification, including frequently asked questions and a list of different agencies residents may want to contact to report their change in address – from the county revenue department to schools and more. See http://www.hollyspringsnc.us/dept/planning/zip/ for details.

The Postal Service reported that the survey for Holly Springs residents with Apex zip codes would be conducted in late April or early May. If more than 50% of the survey respondents vote in favor of a zip code change, addresses in the area will be switched to the Holly Springs name and zip code.

Because of the misleading zip codes, emergency response times can be delayed, and residents receive disconnect notices from electric, cable and gas companies. Some residents experience problems trying to register to vote, register their vehicles and obtain a driver license. And, in addition to a myriad of other problems, residents have contended with parcel delivery companies, such as UPS and FedEx, which have refused to deliver packages to homes in the area with inaccurate zip codes.

As a result of the zip code modification requests, and because of the Town's continued growth, the US Post Office announced that the Holly Springs Post Office located on Third Street will be expanding later this year.

For additional information about the zip code modification, contact Gina Bobber, director of Holly Springs Planning & Zoning, at (919) 557-3928.
