Water Safe to Drink, Holly Glen Residents Assured 12/26/06

Residents in a portion of Holly Glen subdivision can resume drinking and cooking with tap water, a state water quality engineer has told them.

Town officials have discontinued the water advisory they issued last Thursday after elevated levels of the chemical xylene were found in the water system in the vicinity of Sycamore Ridge Lane. On Tuesday, the Town plans to distribute follow-up fliers to residents who received last Thursday's advisory.

Preliminary results of water tests have consistently shown xylene levels to be well below what the state and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency allow. Repeated water flushing in recent days apparently has dropped xylene levels even further to barely detectable amounts.

Mixed xylenes are used as solvents in products such as paints and coatings and are blended into gasoline. The maximum allowable limit is 10 parts per million.

The week before Christmas, several homeowners in the vicinity of Sycamore Ridge Lane, Sycamore Creek Drive and Acorn Falls Court began reporting that their water smelled bad or caused a burning sensation when they drank it. Test results showed above-normal xylene levels.

The Town notified the state Division of Water Quality about the xylene even though testing indicated that amounts were below the maximum allowable. Michael Douglas, senior engineer with the N.C. Division of Water Quality, met with the Town's Public Utilities staff and with several homeowners about the xylene. Douglas said that the water is safe to drink.

Town officials are awaiting official results of additional water samples taken Monday for confirmation that xylene levels are very low and getting lower.

"During the same time, we will be investigating the different areas where we think xylene could have gotten into the system," Thomas Tillage, the Town's Public Utilities director, said Monday night. "We will continue the investigation until we're able to determine the source."
