Drinking Water Advisory Issued in Portion of Holly Glen 12/22/06 Residents in a portion of Holly Glen subdivision have been asked not to drink or cook with tap water while the Town investigates how the chemical xylene apparently entered the water system there recently. Preliminary laboratory results in that area indicate that xylene levels are elevated, but still below the state's allowable limit. Town employees delivered notices Thursday evening to homes in the vicinity of Sycamore Ridge Lane, Sycamore Creek Drive and Acorn Falls Court. The Town is trying to pinpoint when and how the chemical entered the water system. The Town's Public Utilities staff suspects that it may have happened about a week ago since homeowners first began noticing the problem last weekend. A total of about five homeowners on Sycamore Ridge Lane, Sycamore Creek Drive and Acorn Falls Court reported that their water smelled bad or caused a burning sensation when they drank it. Test results showed the above-normal xylene levels. “At this point as far as we know, this is the only area affected,” Public Utilities Director Thomas Tillage said Thursday. Mixed xylenes are used as solvents in products such as paints and coatings and are blended into gasoline. The state's allowable limit is 10 parts per million. Initial water sampling in the Sycamore Ridge area indicated xylene levels that are elevated, but below 10 parts per million. Town officials are awaiting the results of additional sampling. The state Division of Water Quality has been notified. Short-term xylene exposure can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat, and may cause stomach and neurological effects. Long-term exposure results primarily in central nervous system effects such as headache, dizziness, fatigue, tremors and lack of coordination. Respiratory, cardiovascular and kidney effects also have been noted in the literature about xylene. More Information Thomas Tillage Amy Jo Moore
