Town Reminds Residents of Variety of Materials that can be Recycled

Did you know that you can recycle steel food cans, as well as glass food and beverage containers of any color, at your curbside? Cardboard cereal, shoe and laundry boxes can be recycled, too, along with corrugated cardboard boxes and much more.

“While many residents are doing a great job putting common recyclables out for collection, there are a lot of additional items that can be recycled that people may not know about,” said Public Works Director Luncie McNeil.

Holly Springs residents can recycle the following materials at their curbs on the same day as garbage collection:

Glass
Accepted: All glass food and beverage containers, any color.
Not accepted: Plate glass, ceramic materials or any glass that is not a food container.
How to recycle glass: Remove metal tops and rinse all containers. Paper labels do not need to be removed.

Aluminum, tin & steel cans
Accepted: Any aluminum drink containers and steel food cans.
Not accepted: Aluminum foil or pie plates, etc.
How to recycle metal cans: Empty and rinse all cans.

Newspapers and magazines
Accepted: Newspapers and all inserts that come with them; magazines with stapled bindings only.
Not accepted: Magazines with glued bindings, books, tissue or other paper products. Phone books are not accepted for collection from residential curbsides. (A special container is set up near Town Hall every spring for phone book recycling.)
How to recycle newspapers and magazines: Place the newspapers on top of the cans and glass. Please cover with plastic if raining and please secure papers with cords on sides of bin.

Plastics
Accepted: All plastic #1 through #7, as long as the mouth of the container is smaller than the base.
Not accepted: Any plastic containers that have contained antifreeze, motor oil or other hazardous waste.
How to recycle plastics: Discard lids, rinse all containers and crush.

Corrugated cardboard and chipboard
Accepted: From residential customers only. Un-waxed corrugated cardboard (flat on outsides and wavy in middle) and chipboard (cereal, shoe and laundry detergent boxes).
Not accepted: No packing material, Styrofoam or plastics, no food on cardboard, no pizza boxes.
How to recycle cardboard: All material must be removed from inside boxes; remove excess tape and packing list; cut or tear into pieces no larger than 3 feet x 3 feet, in limited quantities, and neatly stack flattened cardboard under bin.

Junk mail and paper
Accepted: General mail from solicitations, envelopes without plastic windows, writing paper, office paper and computer paper.
Not accepted: Window envelopes, papers with adhesives, stickers, plastic inserts.
How to recycle junk mail: Please cover with plastic if raining and please secure papers with cords on sides of bin.

Common recyclables also can be deposited in four recycling igloos that are available downtown in the parking lot across Ballentine Street from Town Hall. The igloos are available to collect cardboard, newspapers, magazines and junk mail, plastic containers, aluminum cans, and clear glass. A special container is set up at this location every spring for phone book recycling. Also at this location is a brown metal trash dumpster enclosed in a wooden fence for Town Hall use only.
