Holly Springs Celebration to Commemorate Martin Luther King Jr.
Celebration Includes March and Special Speaker

On Sunday, Jan. 16, Holly Springs is celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. Cosponsored by the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee and the Town of Holly Springs, the celebration will consist of a march and a program featuring Daniel T. Blue Jr. Esq., former speaker of the NC House of Representatives. The public is invited to attend both events.

The march begins at 2:15 p.m. and travels from Town Hall along Main Street and Holly Springs Road to Holly Ridge Middle School. The march is in commemoration of King.

At 3 p.m., the free ceremony begins at Holly Ridge Middle School. Blue, the keynote speaker, sponsored the bill that sets aside King's birthday as a North Carolina holiday. The ceremony should last a little more than one hour.

Reverend Otis G. Byrd of First Baptist Church of Holly Springs is heading up the events and is planning for future celebrations commemorating Martin Luther King Jr.

“We're planning this to become an annual event each year to reflect the message and the dream of Dr. King,” Byrd said. “I'm really focusing this year on trying to begin this process because we have become such a diverse community. This little pocket of Holly Springs is a great melting pot.”

Byrd encouraged Holly Springs residents to participate in the day's events.

HOLLY SPRINGS TOWN HALL CLOSED FOR MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.'S BIRTHDAY

Holly Springs Town Hall administration offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 17, for Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. During the holiday, garbage and recycling collection will remain on schedule. There will be no yard waste, bulky items or leaf collection on the holiday; these services will resume the following weeks. For additional information on garbage, recycling and yard waste pickup, contact the Department of Public Works at (919) 552-5920.
