7/20/05 Road Construction Progresses through Town By Angela Grayson Many residents will be thrilled at the end of summer when Town-funded construction is completed on several roadways. Currently, construction on two major intersections along Holly Springs Road is underway. As construction on these projects nears an end, the Town continues making and planning more road improvements in other sections of Town. Holly Springs Road Intersections with Main Street and Sunset Lake Road Construction on the Main Street/ Holly Springs Road intersection continues and should be complete in August. Already, the roadways have been widened to four-lanes divided by medians at the intersection. The intersection will include pedestrian sidewalks and a new traffic signal. The improvements will allow the intersection to handle increased traffic for the next decade. Construction also is continuing on the Sunset Lake Road/ Holly Springs Road intersection. The roadways at the intersection have been widened to four-lanes divided by medians with pedestrian sidewalks. A new traffic signal is part of this project, as well. The intersection improvements will handle the projected traffic increase from the new shopping center, located at the intersection and scheduled to open later this year, as well as traffic increases during the next decade. Construction on this project should be complete in August. “The intersection projects are almost complete,” said Holly Springs Engineering Department Director Stephanie Sudano. “We appreciate the public's patience with the construction.” Along Avent Ferry Road The Avent Ferry Road extension project, which will pave the gravel connector road between the Leslie-Alford-Mims house and Earp Street, is underway. Currently, the gravel road is closed as construction progresses. Work should be completed by September. Another Avent Ferry Road project will begin later this summer with work continuing into the fall. This project will create angled parking along the road between the Town Hall parking lot and Ballentine Street and will include construction of a sidewalk. Project plans currently are being finalized. Holly Springs Elementary Carpool Loop Improvements to Holly Springs Road at Holly Springs Elementary School to extend the length of the carpool lane are underway. Construction should be finished by the beginning of the school year. Ballentine Street in the Holly Springs Business Park Construction is underway to extend Ballentine Street 2,000 feet deeper into the Holly Springs Business Park, which will provide access to more industrial properties. Construction should be completed this calendar year. The street will eventually become a four-lane, median-divided roadway. Ballentine Street at the Future Library and Cultural Center Site Construction to realign approximately 1,000 feet of roadway to serve the future library and cultural center in downtown Holly Springs will begin in September this year. The portion of Ballentine Street at the library and cultural center site will be closed while the road, parking lots and buildings are constructed.
