1/31/05 Town Switches to Chlorine Water Disinfection During March The Town of Holly Springs purchases its drinking water from the EM Johnson Water Plant in Raleigh and the Harnett County Regional Water Plant in Lillington. Due to the change in the water treatment process, which will affect the customers of Holly Springs, we are sending this notice to all our water customers. Beginning March 1, 2005, the above-mentioned water facilities will implement the annual switch from chloramines disinfection to free chlorine. The switch will last until April 1 and is being coordinated with an identical switch by Harnett County and the City of Raleigh. State and federal regulatory agencies mandate this switch. THE WATER WILL CONTINUE TO BE COMPLETELY SAFE TO DRINK DURING THE SWITCH PERIOD, BUT CONSUMERS MAY NOTICE MORE CHLORINE TASTE AND ODOR. Kidney dialysis users should be aware that the water may contain chloramines, chlorine, or a mixture during March. During the month of April, the water plant will return to the use of chloramines disinfection. Mixtures of chlorine and chloramines may be present during the early days of April. Aquarium owners should use neutralizers that work on chlorine as well as chloramines during this period. Please contact your local aquarium supply dealer for more information. The Holly Springs Department of Water Quality employees will also conduct flushing of the water distribution system during this period to hasten the change of chloramines to chlorine residual disinfectant. The system flushing may result in some minor discoloration of the city's water. If you have any questions, please contact Thomas Tillage, Director of Water Quality, at (919) 577-1090 or (919) 577-2273.
