Water Remains Safe to Drink Despite Musty Odor, Taste

Problems with the taste and odor of town drinking water should diminish within a few days.

The culprit has been algae blooms in the reservoir at the regional water plant in Harnett County. However, the water remains safe to drink. It continues to meet all state regulations.

Holly Springs buys its drinking water from Harnett County and from Raleigh.

After the first complaint last Sunday, town Public Utilities employees flushed water lines for several hours. When that did not solve the problem, they shut off water from Harnett County and began drawing only Raleigh water.

The musty odor and smell didn't go away immediately, however, because of the water that already was in Holly Springs pipelines.

To deal with the algae, the Harnett County treatment plant staff is treating water drawn directly from the Cape Fear River rather than placing it in the plant reservoir beforehand. The reservoir and the regional storage tank are being emptied of the musty water.
