7/28/05 Diverse Assortment of Art and Cultural Workshops for Groups to be Offered through Parks & Recreation Department The Holly Springs Parks & Recreation Department is launching a new assortment of workshops – ranging from art and literary workshops to ones that result in participants earning a scout badge or learning a new art-related technology. The workshops, under the Art for Everybody program, cater to groups looking to participate in organized activities that develop a specific skill. What's so unique about this assortment of workshops is that the majority of workshops aren't scheduled at a specific time; the group interested in the workshop sets the time and date of the workshop – a time and date that is convenient for the group. And, workshops can be geared toward different age groups, allowing the greatest benefit to participants. “While our regularly scheduled leisure programs have had success in the past, they were scheduled at a specific time and date that may not have been convenient for everyone who wanted to attend,” said Marcia Schroer, leisure programs manager with the Parks & Recreation Department. “Also, while some of the workshops we scheduled generated a lot of interest, some generated very little interest. So, the ability for groups to sign up for a workshop they're interested in, for a time that's good for the group, is not only in the best interest of the group but also in the best interest of the Town and Parks & Recreation resources.” Workshop topics include puppets, theatre, dance, clay, music, drawing, etiquette, beading, miming, clowning, painting, drawing, mosaics, drama, culinary art, woodcarving, fabric art, weaving, poetry, literature and more. For scouts, some workshops offered can meet the requirements for art, drama and culture badges. The assortment of workshops can be viewed online at www.hollyspringsnc.us/a4e.htm. Workshops begin in September. Most workshops will take place at the Hunt Community Center, but some may be held at other Parks & Recreation facilities, such as Bass Lake Park, Jones Park, Womble Park or the future Holly Springs Library and Cultural Center, which is to open in the fall of 2006. Prices range from $4 to $25 per person depending upon the workshop choice and the number of people in the group registered for the workshop. Workshops can last from 45 minutes to four hours or longer, depending on the workshop. Individuals can participate in Art for Everybody workshops by contacting Schroer and requesting to be added to the next group that registers for a particular workshop. To register for a workshop, select a workshop from the online catalogue at www.hollyspringsnc.us/a4e.htm and contact Marcia Schroer at (919) 557-9602 or Marcia.Schroer@hollyspringsnc.us. The group leader must submit the full payment and necessary paperwork for the workshop within two weeks of scheduling the workshop. Because the Art for Everybody program is still growing and more workshops are being added to the ones currently offered, a complete, printed catalogue of workshops will be completed this fall. Art for Everybody Volunteers Needed Volunteers (ages 14 and above) are needed to serve as Parks & Recreation representatives for the Art for Everybody workshops and special events, and for the senior adult classes and activities. These volunteers will prepare rooms for assigned workshops, events and classes; meet and greet the instructors; escort the instructors to the assigned rooms; help instructors carry supplies into rooms; meet and greet the participants of classes and workshops; sit in on or participate in assigned workshops; and help clean up afterward. Call Marcia Schroer at (919) 557-9602 to volunteer.
