Town to Begin Testing Efficiency of Sewer Collection System
Testing to Run From August, 2004, to Spring, 2005

The Town of Holly Springs Public Works Department will be testing the efficiency of the Town’s sewer collection system beginning this summer. The tests will identify any collection system inflow and infiltration problems, such as improperly joined pipes, faulty joints in manhole grouting and illegal storm drain taps. The Town will then work to correct any problem areas, eliminating the recurring costs of treating unnecessary water at the Town Waste Water Treatment Plant.

Residents should expect to see Town personnel in subdivisions and other areas throughout Holly Springs inspecting the sewer collection system during work hours. The inspections include videotaping the collection system, using a high-velocity jet to clean the collection system and using smoke to test the collection system.

During the smoke test, a nontoxic bluish smoke is forced into a manhole. The smoke will then rise out of any area of the sewer system that is improperly sealed, identifying areas that may be in need of repair. The smoke is not harmful and should not enter a residence if the plumbing has been installed correctly.

Town employees will place door hangers on residences at least 24 hours in advance of testing in the area. The Town is to begin testing off Sunset Lake Road in August. Public Works Director Luncie McNeil said that testing should be finished by spring, 2005.
